Chapter 6 - Anna Wakes Up

Anna woke thirty hours later.
She opened her eyes in the same hospital where her children were sleeping two floors away, and the first thing she did was try to sit up.
“Camila,” she rasped.
Laura was there. So was Nurse Margaret, off shift but unwilling to leave before Anna knew the truth.
“She’s safe,” Laura said. “All three children are safe.”
Anna covered her mouth and began sobbing into her hands.
What had happened to her was medical, not moral. A severe infection, dehydration, and postpartum complications had knocked her body down faster than she understood. She had tried to push through it because poor mothers are often taught that needing help is a luxury.
By the time she called Carmen, she was already confused and dangerously weak.
By the time Camila loaded the twins into the cart, Anna was unconscious.
Laura told her everything gently.
The road.
The cart.
The locked door.
The voicemail.
Anna turned her face toward the pillow and made a sound so broken Margaret had to look away.
“She went to Carmen?” Anna whispered.
“Yes.”
“She knew?”
Laura did not soften the truth.
“She heard your message.”
Anna closed her eyes.
For years, Carmen had threatened to prove Anna was unfit. She called her chaotic, dramatic, careless. She told neighbors Mateo would be ashamed of the way Anna lived. She offered help only when it gave her a new angle of control.
Now Carmen’s refusal had exposed exactly what kind of grandmother she was.
When Camila was brought into the room later, she approached the bed slowly, as if afraid her mother might vanish again. Anna lifted one weak arm.
Camila climbed carefully beside her.
“I took them to the hospital,” she whispered.
“I know,” Anna cried. “You saved them.”
Camila pressed her face into Anna’s shoulder.
“I went to Grandma first.”
Anna held her tighter.
“I’m so sorry.”
Camila shook her head.

“She didn’t open. But the hospital did.”
That sentence became the line Laura wrote at the top of her report.
