Chapter 6 - The Dark Stairwell

Heavy tactical boots crunched against the gravel alley behind the building.

Inside the pitch-black apartment, Maya moved without making a sound. She didn't turn on a flashlight; her eyes had adjusted instantly to the ambient moonlight filtering through the dusty windowpanes.

"Two men on the fire escape," Maya whispered to Sal, pointing toward the window. "Two coming up the interior stairs. Standard four-man entry breach."

"I've got three rounds in the snub," Sal whispered back, holding his revolver with steady, trained hands.

"Keep it in your pocket," Maya instructed. "Gunshots bring police. Police bring federal agencies. We finish this silently."

She stepped into the dark hallway outside her apartment door, pulling the door shut behind her until the latch clicked softly.

The third-floor corridor was long, narrow, and smelled of old carpet and boiler steam. At the far end of the hallway, the heavy steel door leading to the stairwell creaked open.

A narrow beam of tactical LED light cut through the gloom.

Two men stepped into the hallway. They wore dark tactical jackets, ballistic vests, and communication earpieces. In their hands, they held suppressed nine-millimeter sidearms raised in a high-ready stance.

"Room 304 is down the hall," the lead contractor whispered into his shoulder microphone. "Move fast. Target is high-risk."

They advanced slowly, their boots making soft thud-thud sounds against the carpet runner.

Maya was hanging from the wooden doorframe above them, her knees tucked against her chest, holding her position using core strength and balance alone—a technique developed for high-clearance ambush scenarios.

As the lead operative walked directly beneath her frame, Maya dropped.

She landed square on his shoulders, her feet locking around his neck in a reverse neck-clamp, driving him headfirst into the hardwood floor with terrifying velocity.

CRACK.

The man went limp instantly, his weapon skittering across the floor.

Before the second operative could raise his sidearm, Maya spun on her knees, her right foot sweeping his lead leg out from beneath him. As he fell forward, her palm struck upward, catching his chin with a brutal, rising strike that snapped his jaw shut and knocked him unconscious before his head hit the floorboards.

Two operatives down in three seconds.

Maya picked up one of the suppressed nine-millimeter handguns, checked the magazine by feel in the dark, and ejected the chambered round, tossing the firing pin into her pocket to neutralize the weapon.

She looked down the dark hallway toward the fire escape door.

A third operative stepped into the moonlight near the window, his weapon raised.

"Vance!" the man hissed, his voice tight with adrenaline. "Stand down! We have direct orders from Directorate Seven to retrieve you!"

Maya didn't answer. She faded back into the dark recess of an apartment doorway, vanishing like a shade into the night.
