Chapter 2 - The Ghost's Stance

Grant felt the shift in the room's energy before he understood it.
The mocking jeers from his corner had evaporated into a heavy, suffocating silence. He glanced over at Coach Sal, expecting the old man to yell at the woman to get out of the ring, but Sal was frozen, staring at Maya’s hands as if he were looking at a specter from a forgotten war.
"What's the matter, old man?" Grant scoffed, trying to shake off the sudden chill crawling up his spine. "You think she's gonna hurt me?"
"Grant," Sal said, his voice dropping into an urgent, deadly serious tone. "Step out of the ring. Right now."
Grant laughed, but the sound was forced, hollow. "Are you kidding me? I’m not stepping out because some quiet chick rolled up her sleeves. I'm going to finish this."
He turned back to Maya, raising his heavy leather gloves. "Last chance, lady. Tap the mat and walk away."
Maya didn't answer. She took one short, silent step forward.
Grant snapped. Annoyed by her silence and embarrassed by the heavy quiet that had gripped the room, he threw a fast, heavy left jab aimed directly at her nose, intending to end the fight in a single strike.
He never hit her.
The moment Grant’s shoulder twitched to initiate the punch, Maya moved. Her movement was not a soft dodge; it was a explosive, micro-angled slip.
She deflected Grant’s heavy arm with a light, open-palm slap against his wrist, redirecting his momentum outward. In the same breath, before Grant could recover his balance, Maya's right palm struck like a piston, driving straight into the nerve cluster beneath Grant's left armpit.
THUMP.
A sharp, sickening pop echoed through the quiet gym.
Grant gasped, a sudden bolt of white-hot agony shooting down his ribcage. His left arm dropped limp to his side, completely deadened by the nerve strike.
"What the—" Grant stumbled back, his eyes widening in shock and horror.
Maya didn't pursue him. She didn't smile, nor did she raise her voice. She simply stepped back into her low, predatory stance, her breathing light and even, her eyes fixed on his throat.
"Jesus Christ!" one of Grant's corner men shouted, taking a step toward the ropes. "What did she just do to his arm?!"
"I told you to get out of the ring, Grant!" Coach Sal roared, grabbing the top rope with white knuckles. "That’s Maya Vance! She was the hand-to-hand combat instructor for the 9th Joint Special Operations Task Force! She’s not sparring with you, you idiot—she’s dismantling you!"
Grant’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped beast. His left arm felt like dead weight, hanging uselessly at his hip. Panic, hot and sharp, replaced the arrogance that had fueled him for three months.
"You... you hit me in a dead zone!" Grant snarled, grinding his teeth as he adjusted his stance, relying entirely on his massive right hand. "That’s illegal in sparring!"
May you like
Maya spoke for the first time. Her voice was low, flat, and raspy, carrying the terrifying authority of someone who had operated in the darkest corners of the world.
"This isn't sparring anymore, Grant," she said softly. "You wanted to teach me a lesson about where women belong. Teach me."
