Chapter 6 - THE WHISPER OF A NAME

Nora stirred slightly against his chest, disturbed by the sudden, ragged vibration of his voice and the heavy pounding of his heart beneath her cheek.

She didn't open her brown eyes fully. She merely shifted her tiny head, rubbing her small nose against his dark tattoos, her small fingers tightening slightly around her floppy-eared stuffed rabbit.

"Mama..." Nora murmured softly in her sleep, her voice a tiny, innocent sigh that drifted into the vast, silent suite.

Adrian’s hand tightened around the edges of the open locket, his knuckles turning chalk-white under the strain.

"Who..." Adrian breathed, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and burning with a terrifying mix of hope, desperation, and raw agony. "Who is your mother?"

He leaned his face down closer to her small ear, his trembling lips hovering an inch from her pale-blue silk bow, waiting for a name—a piece of a puzzle that was threatening to tear his entire world apart from the inside out.

Before Nora could form another word, the heavy silence outside his private wing was shattered.

From the long, marble corridor beyond the forbidden oak door, the sudden sound of frantic, hurried footsteps echoed against the high walls.

A woman’s voice—filled with pure, unadulterated panic, trembling with a terror that cut through the silence of the estate—called out desperately from the hallway.

"Nora!" the voice cried out, echoing down the corridor. "Nora, please! Where are you?!"

Adrian’s head snapped toward the open oak door, his dark eyes instantly locking onto the sliver of the hallway visible through the crack.

He recognized the panic in that voice. It belonged to Emma Foster—the quiet, extremely reserved household employee who had been hired through an elite third-party agency six months ago to manage the estate’s private linen supply. A woman who always wore a simple black-and-white staff uniform, kept her head lowered, avoided eye contact with security staff, and worked almost exclusively in the lower service levels of the estate.

A woman who had never once set foot near the upper east wing.
