Chapter 5 - THE UNSEEN TRUTH

The silence in the grand bedroom became absolute, suffocating, and heavy with an unbearable tension.
Adrian leaned his head down, his dark swept-back hair falling slightly forward over his forehead. He pressed the microscopic catch on the lower edge of the oval piece.
CLICK.
The tiny silver locket sprang open in his hand.
The viewer never sees what lies inside the silver oval. The lens stays locked entirely on Adrian Kane’s face—tracking every shattering micro-expression as his dark eyes scan the interior contents.
His eyes widened in an instant of sheer, unadulterated terror.
The dark, cold, impenetrable veil that had protected his soul for three years was shredded to ribbons in a fraction of a second. The color drained completely from his sharp face, leaving his skin a ghostly, sickly ash-gray. His jaw fell slightly open, his lips trembling as his dark eyes moved back and forth across the hidden photograph and the faint, handwritten inscription tucked within the silver frame.
A tear—hot, heavy, and completely uncontrolled—welled in the corner of his dark eye and spilled down his cheek, tracing a path over his sharp jawline and dropping onto his bare, tattooed chest.
He couldn't breathe. His chest seized, his lungs refusing to take in air as his mind tried to process an impossible reality.
He slowly, agonizingly looked down from the contents of the open locket to the sleeping face of the child resting against his heart.

He looked at the delicate shape of her nose. He looked at the soft curve of her chin. He looked at the gentle, curly texture of her light-brown hair. Features he had been too blind, too bitter, and too consumed by dark grief to notice three minutes ago now burned into his vision with blinding, agonizing clarity.
"Where..." Adrian rasped, his gravelly voice dropping to a raw, shaking whisper that barely vibrated in the quiet air of the room. "...where did you get this?"
