Chapter 6 - The Service Room

The court officer arrived before sunset.

Not police with sirens. Not a dramatic raid. A quiet process server accompanied by a child welfare liaison and Dana Price herself, who entered the house in a charcoal suit with a leather folder and the expression of a woman who had already won the first necessary inch.

Rodrigo tried to refuse entry.

Dana handed him the filed notice.

“You can contest it tomorrow,” she said. “Tonight, we document.”

The liaison’s name was Grace Holloway. She knelt at Emiliano’s level but did not touch him. Her voice was soft, and she asked only simple questions. Did he know where his shoes were? Where did he sleep? What did he eat for dinner? Who helped him when he was scared?

Emiliano answered almost nothing.

That silence was also documentation.

Eventually, Mariana asked him gently, “Can you show me your room?”

He looked toward Teresa first.

Teresa’s face went still.

Grace Holloway noticed.

“Emiliano,” Grace said, “you may show your mother if you want to.”

The service room was near the laundry.

It had once been used for storage. There was a narrow mattress on the floor, one thin blanket, a plastic bin with broken toys, and a nightlight plugged in behind a laundry basket. The air smelled faintly of detergent and heat from the machines.

Mariana stood in the doorway and could not move.

Dana touched her arm lightly. Not comfort exactly. Grounding.

“Breathe,” she said.

Behind them, Rodrigo began talking too quickly.

“He liked it down here. It was quiet. He had tantrums upstairs. The baby needed peace.”

Mariana turned around.

“The mistress’s baby needed peace, so my son slept by the laundry?”

Paulina was not there. She had stayed upstairs with Bruno, suddenly unwilling to witness the part of the truth that could not be dressed in silk.

Teresa lifted her chin.

“In my day, children learned their place.”

Mariana looked at the mattress on the floor.

Then at Emiliano clutching the wooden train.

“No,” she said. “Adults taught them one.”

Grace Holloway photographed the room.

Dana added the images to the emergency filing.

Rodrigo watched his old power evaporate under the dull flash of professional documentation.

No shouting could change the mattress.

No charm could explain the transfers.

No family name could turn neglect into discipline once outsiders were writing it down.
