Chapter 4 - The Petition on the Table

Mariana did not drink the water when the housekeeper brought it.

She set it on the coffee table, untouched, beside the stuffed dinosaur.

Then she reached into her navy blazer and removed the folded legal petition from her bag.

Rodrigo saw the paper and moved before he could hide his fear.

“What are you doing?”

“Opening the thing you made necessary.”

Teresa narrowed her eyes. “No need to make a scene.”

Mariana unfolded the petition and laid it flat on the glass coffee table. The words were dense, formal, and unreadable from across the room, but Rodrigo recognized legal formatting the way guilty people recognize locked doors.

Paulina stopped smiling.

“What is that?” Rodrigo asked.

Mariana unlocked her phone and called Dana Price.

The attorney answered on the second ring.

“Mariana,” Dana said. “Are you with Emiliano?”

Rodrigo’s face went pale.

Mariana put the call on speaker.

“Yes.”

“Is he safe?”

Mariana looked at her son, still crouched near the suitcase, one hand now touching the red sneakers as if he could not decide whether they were real.

“He is in front of me.”

Dana’s tone changed. “Listen carefully. Do not let anyone touch that document.”

Rodrigo stepped forward. “Hang up.”

Mariana lifted her eyes to him.

“No.”

Teresa’s voice turned cold. “You have no right to walk into this house and threaten us.”

“This is my house,” Mariana said quietly. “My money pays for it. My transfers paid for his care. And a judge is going to read where that money went.”

Teresa looked at Rodrigo.

That tiny glance told Mariana the money trail mattered.

Dana continued, calm and precise. “Mariana, the emergency petition has been filed electronically. The printed copy you have is a service and preservation copy. Photograph the room. Do not disturb the child. Do not allow them to remove records, medications, clothing, or devices.”

Rodrigo swore under his breath.

Paulina pulled away from his shoulder.

“Rodrigo,” she whispered, “what records?”

He did not answer.

Mariana lifted her phone and photographed the living room. The toys on the floor. Emiliano’s bare feet. The absence of a child’s place at the table. The framed photos. Teresa holding Bruno while Emiliano watched from the floor.

Her hand did not shake.

Teresa clutched Bruno closer.

For the first time since Mariana entered, the older woman looked less like a queen.

And more like someone hearing gates lock.
