Chapter 5 - The Alert Julian Received
The red nurse-call button activated more than a hallway light.
Because I was being monitored for pregnancy complications, pressing it while my heart rate spiked triggered an urgent obstetric alert.
The hospital system notified the nursing station, attending physician, and the emergency contact listed in my chart.
Julian.
His phone sounded in the middle of the board meeting.
The alert showed my room number and the words immediate assistance requested.
He called the hospital.
No one answered inside my room because Victoria had already pulled the phone cord from the wall.
That was why he left the meeting without explanation and drove directly back.
He arrived before security because he had been only six blocks away.
The nurse entered seconds behind him.
She separated us, checked my breathing, and called obstetrics.
The baby’s heartbeat remained strong.
My shoulder was bruised, but there was no direct injury to my stomach.
Victoria attempted to leave.
Hospital security stopped her in the corridor.
She demanded to call the family attorney.
Then she accused me of experiencing a psychiatric episode.
The room’s camera answered her.
Private maternity rooms did not record patients continuously, but the doorway security system captured entry, exit, and safety incidents near the bed.
The nurse-call alarm automatically preserved the previous several minutes of footage.
It showed Victoria taking my phone.
It showed her disconnecting the bedside handset.
It showed her pinning me down.
It also captured her voice clearly.
There doesn’t need to be a trust if there is no heir.
