Chapter 6 - A WORD THAT SHATTERS THE HOUSE

The question hung in the air like a suspended blade.
The mysterious little girl did not look at the food. She did not look at the luxurious hallway or the beautiful woman standing paralyzed behind them. Her slate-gray eyes—so impossibly identical to Ryan's—remained welded to his rugged face, swimming with fresh, hot tears that spilled over her lashes.
Her small, parched lips parted.
"Daddy…" she whispered.
The word was barely louder than an exhalation, a fragile, cracked syllable that tore from the deepest hollow of her chest.
Slowly, lifting an arm that seemed almost too heavy for her frail shoulder to support, the little girl reached out. Her trembling, dirt-smudged fingertips drifted through the warm air and pressed lightly, reverently, against the dark stubble of Ryan’s square jaw.
The touch was feather-light, yet it struck Ryan with the force of an artillery shell.
The roaring silence of the corridor pressed in on his eardrums, drowning out the hum of the house, the ticking of his gold watch, the beat of his own heart. He was completely, utterly paralyzed. A cold, electric shock raced down his spine, locking his muscles into stone. He was looking into the eyes of a child who carried his face, his features, his mother’s rare sapphire-flecked gaze—calling him the one name he had only ever heard from Lily’s lips.
Beside them, Emily stood frozen.
Her fair, rosy complexion had drained to an absolute, translucent white. The delicate gold earrings she wore trembled against her jaw with the violent, rapid hammering of her pulse. She looked at the child’s dirty hand resting against her husband’s cheek, looked at the undeniable genetic symmetry between their faces, and felt the foundations of her world disintegrate beneath her feet.
She loved Ryan with every fiber of her soul. She had married him knowing the violent shadows of his life, accepting the blood on his hands because she believed in his absolute, unshakeable loyalty to her and their family. Ryan had sworn on his life that there were no secrets between them, no ghosts from his past that could ever breach their sanctuary.
Yet here, crawling out of the very architecture of their suburban home, was a five-year-old child who carried his soul in her eyes, weeping against his skin, calling him Daddy.
"Ryan..." Emily’s voice was barely a breath, stripped of all warmth, vibrating on the razor edge of an impending scream.
Slowly, agonizingly, Ryan’s head turned.

His dark eyes, wide and haunted with a terrifying incomprehension, met Emily’s stricken, devastated gaze. The legendary don who commanded three hundred armed men looked entirely shattered, his lips parting, his baritone voice cracking with raw, unvarnished panic.
"Emily... I swear to God... I don't know who she is."
