Chapter 10 - SOVEREIGN PROTECTION

The first pale, violet light of dawn was beginning to seep through the tall arched windows of the grand corridor, chasing away the long shadows of the night.

The plate of turkey sandwiches still sat upon the floorboards, half-eaten, beside the splintered ruin of the wainscoting panel. But the fear that had suffocated the hallway had dissolved into the morning air.

Maya sat cross-legged on the floor, wrapped entirely in a plush cashmere blanket that Emily had retrieved from their master bed. Her matted brown curls had been gently brushed back, her fair, rosy cheeks washed clean of dust and grime. In her hands, she held the plastic cup of apple juice, sipping slowly, her large, slate-gray eyes watching the family around her with a quiet, cautious wonder.

Beside her, Lily was sitting happily, swinging her little white shoes, offering Maya the final half of her sandwich with a bright, dimpled smile. "Eat the crust too, Maya. It makes your hair curly like mine."

Maya took the bread, offering a tiny, fragile smile—the first smile to touch her lips in months.

Ryan stood beside Emily, his arm wrapped firmly around his wife’s waist. He had removed his black suit jacket and shoulder holster, wearing only his dark dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up past his forearms, revealing the dense, dark tattoos that coiled around his muscular wrists.

The front doors of the estate clicked open downstairs, followed by the heavy, disciplined footsteps of Leo, his chief of security, arriving for the morning briefing.

Ryan did not move to greet him. He remained in the hallway, looking down at the two little girls sitting together in the golden light of the dawn.

"What do we do about Frankie?" Emily asked softly, leaning her head against Ryan’s shoulder.

"Frankie stays," Ryan murmured, his gravelly baritone steady as bedrock. "He kept Clara alive. He kept my daughter breathing when the whole world was hunting her. He has a place in this house for the rest of his life."

Ryan walked slowly forward.

He sank down onto both knees before Maya, his massive frame folding easily into the warm light. He did not reach out to grab her; he simply rested his large, open hand on the floor between them, palm up, waiting for her to choose.

Maya looked at his palm, then looked up into his rugged, handsome face—seeing the identical gray eyes, the identical square jaw, the father who had looked at her not with disgust, but with a fierce, sacred devotion.

Slowly, deliberately, Maya reached out from beneath the cashmere blanket.

Her small, pale hand rested firmly in his calloused palm.

Ryan’s fingers closed gently around hers, an unbreakable iron shield anchoring her to his life forever.

"You're not going back into the wall, Maya," Ryan said, his voice rich with an eternal, sovereign promise that would stand against every syndicate on the continent. "You will never hide in the dark again. This is your home. Lily is your sister, Emily is your mother, and I am your father. And as long as I draw breath, no one in this world will ever touch a hair on your head."

May you like

Maya looked at him, her chin lifting, a deep, contented sigh leaving her small chest as she leaned forward, resting her forehead against his broad knee.

Outside the high windows, the autumn sun crested the horizon, flooding the Westchester hills in brilliant, blinding gold. The fortress had been breached, but within its walls, the fractured pieces of a family had finally been made whole.
