Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME TO THE WINDOW

The neighbor’s security footage was incomplete. It showed Claire approaching our gate shortly after nine at night and leaving less than four minutes later. It did not reveal what she said or whether she saw anyone inside.

But it proved she survived the date on the death certificate.

Cole searched the surrounding camera network and traced her route to a car registered under another woman’s name.

The owner was Rebecca Shaw, a former nurse who worked with Claire at Northbridge.

Rebecca had left the clinic shortly before Claire disappeared. She now lived in a rural town almost two hundred miles away and initially refused to speak over the phone.

When investigators arrived, she asked one question.

“Did Vanessa find her?”

Cole told her the circumstances.

Rebecca began crying.

Claire had stayed with her intermittently after escaping from a private facility where she was held under another name. According to Rebecca, Claire discovered the medication and billing discrepancies, then received threats from Michael’s legal team. She planned to report the clinic to regulators.

Before she could, someone intercepted her while she was driving home.

Claire remembered being sedated.

She woke in a small room at a private residential treatment center.

Staff told her she had suffered a psychiatric episode and that her family arranged temporary care.

She tried to call me.

They refused.

Then she learned that someone had been declared dead under her identity.

Rebecca helped her escape after a nurse quietly contacted her.

The account sounded extraordinary.

The supporting evidence made it difficult to dismiss.

Rebecca retained photographs of bruising, partial medical records, and messages Claire sent while hiding.

One message read:

Vanessa has Daniel believing I’m unstable. If I go home without proof, she’ll make me disappear again.

Another:

I saw the children through the window. Noah recognized me. Vanessa closed the blinds.

Claire did not trust the police initially because the private facility claimed she was a voluntary patient and several official documents described her as deceased.

She feared being detained under the wrong identity before reaching someone who believed her.

Cole asked where she was now.

Rebecca hesitated.

They had lost contact three months earlier.

Claire was investigating the woman who died under her name.

That woman, she believed, was the key to proving the fraud.

The chapter ended with Rebecca opening a locked drawer.

Inside was a photograph of Claire standing beside an unfamiliar woman in a hospital parking lot.

On the back, Claire had written:

Her name was Anna. Vanessa knew her before she died.

The woman in the photograph resembled the belongings recorded at St. Agnes.

The false death had not used an anonymous body by accident.

Someone selected a particular woman.

And Claire had learned who she was.
