Chapter 10 - WHAT VANESSA WAS PROTECTING

The independent audit of Northbridge Pediatric Services identified substantial billing irregularities. Several treatments were billed without corresponding clinical documentation. Vendor entities received payments for services that could not be verified. Some accounts used personal information belonging to employees and patients who had not authorized the transactions.
Michael benefited financially through management distributions and the subsequent acquisition.
Vanessa benefited through a family trust that held part of the company.
That explained their original interest in keeping Claire quiet.
It did not fully explain why Vanessa remained so aggressive after the acquisition closed.
Then the financial investigators found the current motive.
The buyer had retained a substantial portion of the purchase price in escrow pending final regulatory clearance. If serious pre-acquisition fraud emerged, Michael’s remaining payout could be frozen or recovered.
The deadline was approaching.
Vanessa expected a distribution from the family trust after the escrow released.
The amount exceeded $2 million.
Claire’s reappearance would threaten that money.
The false death certificate had become an ongoing financial safeguard.
As long as Claire remained officially dead, Michael could argue that her internal complaint was unsupported and that later allegations originated from unreliable third parties.
A living Claire with original records would be different.
She could testify.
She could explain the forged medical documents.
She could identify the people who held her.
Vanessa needed my sister unavailable until the remaining transaction closed.
That also explained the violence against our children.
Noah had seen Claire at the window.
Lily had seen the death certificate.
Vanessa’s control inside our home was weakening at the exact moment her financial interests became vulnerable.
She did not strike Noah because he knew the entire scheme.
She struck him because he refused to obey when she tried to isolate Lily.
The medical and financial conspiracy had reached our living room through a much smaller demand.
Be quiet.
Move aside.
Do not protect your sister.
My son refused.
Then my daughter told me what she knew.
The next discovery concerned my own finances. Vanessa had opened a private account using a power of attorney I signed years earlier for routine household administration. She moved money from our joint savings into an investment vehicle linked to Michael.
I had never approved those transfers.
She was preparing for the possibility that our marriage would end.
The first major confrontation between us occurred through recorded questioning.
I asked whether she ever intended to tell me Claire was alive.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“She was going to destroy our family.”
“Our family?”
“Michael’s business supported us for years.”
“You let me search for my sister.”
“She was unstable.”
“You knew she was alive.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You never would have believed me if I said she needed to stay away.”
That answer told me everything.
She had not merely hidden Claire because the truth was inconvenient.
She believed she had the right to decide which relationships I could keep.
The chapter ended when Cole received an urgent call from Rebecca.
Claire had contacted her.
She was alive.
May you like
And she wanted to meet me.
