Chapter 11 - The Blood Vow

Sadie—or rather, Mia—did what she always did when she saw someone crying.

She stepped closer, wrapped her tiny arms around Lorenzo's neck, and pressed her cheek against his scarred face.

Lorenzo closed his eyes, his long arms wrapping securely around her small frame, pulling his sister's child tightly against his chest, weeping silently into her dark hair.

I stood near the hallway, tears streaming down my own face, watching the powerful man break down into pieces of pure, grateful love.

After several minutes, Mia pulled back, looking at his face with serious eyes.

"Better?" she asked, using the exact same word she used whenever I was sad.

Lorenzo wiped his eyes, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking across his handsome, scarred face. "Much better, sweetie. Much better."

He looked up at me over Mia’s shoulder, his expression shifting from broken sorrow into a profound, fierce gratitude.

"Clara," Lorenzo said, standing up slowly, holding Mia securely on his right hip despite his healing injuries. "Isabella told me how you raised her. How you worked three jobs, slept in laundry rooms, and protected her with your life."

"She is my daughter, Mr. Moretti," I said firmly, my voice steady and unyielding. "I may not have given birth to her, but I am her mother. I will never let anyone take her from me."

Lorenzo walked over to me, stopping inches away. He looked down into my eyes with deep respect.

"I am not here to take her from you, Clara," Lorenzo said softly, his deep voice filled with absolute sincerity. "Julianna made a choice four years ago to protect this child by keeping her hidden. You gave her a home, love, and a mother's warmth when my family could only give her danger."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy parchment document stamped with a red legal wax seal.

"This is an official adoption amendment filed with the state court this morning," Lorenzo explained. "It names you as Mia’s sole, permanent legal mother. My family's legal team will defend that status until the day I die."

I stared at the document, my hands shaking as I touched the thick paper. "You... you aren't going to fight me for custody?"

"I am a man surrounded by blood and enemies, Clara," Lorenzo said solemnly. "You are her mother. But I am her uncle. I am asking you to let me be part of her life. Let me protect you both."

"And Matteo?" I asked, a chill running down my spine.

Lorenzo’s dark eyes hardened into cold, black iron.

"Matteo," Lorenzo whispered, "is being dealt with tonight."
