Chapter 8 - The Forgotten Year

The word hung in the warm, bright air of the kitchen like a toxic vapor.

Ryan didn't hit anything. He didn't scream. His long experience in high-stakes negotiations had trained him to go completely still when receiving catastrophic news. But beneath his tailored black suit, his muscles locked so tight his knuckles turned blue.

"Mine?" Ryan repeated, his voice dangerously smooth. "We have one child, Claire. We have Ethan. He is seven years old. You and I have been married for nine years. Where did a five-year-old girl come from?"

Claire pulled her hands up to her face, burying her features in her palms, her body shaking with deep, chest-heaving sobs.

"Six years ago..." Claire whimpered through her fingers, her American accent thick with suffocating grief. "...when you were traveling for the Chicago merger. You were gone for seven months, Ryan. You were working eighteen-hour days, barely calling home..."

Ryan’s mind raced backward through time, pulling up calendars, flight itineraries, and hotel receipts from six years prior. It was true. The Midwest acquisition had nearly destroyed him professionally. He had lived out of a suitcase in a Chicago high-rise for the better part of a year, coming home only once every three weeks for a exhausted, forty-eight-hour weekend before flying back out.

"I didn't tell you..." Claire continued, her voice small, broken, and terrified. "I found out I was pregnant two weeks after you left. But something... something was wrong with the pregnancy from the start. The doctors told me there were severe neurological complications. They said... they said she wouldn't survive more than a few days after birth."

She looked up at him then, her eyes filled with a raw, desperate madness that made Ryan’s stomach turn.

"I was so alone, Ryan. You were never here. Ethan was only a baby. I couldn't handle the thought of bringing a dying child into this family while you were fighting for your career. So when she was born... down at the private clinic in St. Jude's... I didn't register her."

Ryan felt a wave of nausea hit him so hard he had to reach out and grab the corner of the dining table to steady himself.

"You didn't register her?" Ryan gasped, his dark eyes wide with unadulterated horror. "Claire... what did you do?"

"She didn't die, Ryan!" Claire shrieked softly, her hands reaching out toward him in a frantic gesture of defense. "She lived! The doctors were wrong! But by the time I brought her home, I had already told you I had a miscarriage! I had already filed the medical records! You were coming back from Chicago two weeks later, expecting everything to be back to normal!"

"So you hid her?" Ryan roared, his voice finally breaking through his controlled facade, shattering the peaceful silence of the suburban home. "You hid my daughter in the walls of our house?!"
