Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Wall

For three agonizing seconds, the kitchen fell into a absolute, suffocating silence.
The bright video lighting continued to bathe the room in warm, flawless luminescence, creating a surreal contrast with the intense horror unfolding on the floor. Ryan remained on one knee beside the aluminum vent, his chest rising and falling heavily beneath his dark shirt and black blazer. Claire stood frozen against the counter, her face pale, her knuckles white as she gripped the marble edge behind her. Ethan had backed up against the kitchen cabinets, his small arms wrapped tightly around his knees, his grey socks tucked inward.
Nobody breathed. Nobody spoke. The house seemed to hold its breath.
Then, from the deep, dark void behind the brushed-metal slats of the low wall grate, came a sound.
It was faint—so soft it was almost swallowed by the ambient hum of the stainless-steel refrigerator down the aisle—but it was undeniably human.
It was the ragged, wet hitch of a small child sobbing.
A child was crying inside the wall.
Ryan’s face went entirely slack. The protective anger that had driven him seconds ago drained away, replaced by a horrifying, creeping dread that made his skin turn cold under his fair, rosy complexion. The sound wasn't coming from the ceiling, nor from an upper floor. It was coming from directly behind the six-inch cavity of drywall and stud framing between the kitchen and the sealed structural pillar behind the pantry.
Ryan slowly turned his head away from the vent and looked up at his wife.
Claire was standing stiffly against the counter. Her rapid, panicked breathing was the only sound competing with the faint crying behind the wall. Her chest was heaving so hard her silk blouse strained against its buttons. She pulled her lips inward, biting down until they turned white, her eyes darting around the bright room as if searching for an escape route that didn't exist. She couldn't look down at Ryan. She couldn't look at the vent.
"Claire..." Ryan whispered, his voice stripped of all authority, reduced to a hollow, horrified rasp. "What... what is that?"
Claire didn't answer. A single, heavy tear escaped her eye and tracked down her pale cheek, but her jaw remained locked in an agonizing silence.
The faint weeping behind the wall shifted. The tiny, wet breaths grew closer to the metallic slats, accompanied by the dry, rustling drag of fabric against unfinished wooden studs and dusty insulation.
Ryan turned back to the vent, his dark eyes wide, his hands hovering inches from the metal screws holding the grate in place.
"Hey..." Ryan called out, his voice shaking with intense, raw emotion as he leaned his face closer to the dark gaps. "Hey... can you hear me? Who is in there?"

The crying stopped instantly.
A soft, hesitant scrape sounded against the floorboards inside the wall structure—a tiny weight shifting forward in a cramped, enclosed space.
