Chapter 6 - The Papers That Ended The Argument
Evelyn Pierce had warned Carmen about this moment.
“People who feel entitled to your assets rarely stop at disappointment,” she said. “They escalate to accusation.”
She had been right.
Daniel held the ownership papers with both hands, scanning the first page as if searching for a clerical error that might restore his fantasy.
Laura rushed closer.
“What does it say?”
Daniel did not answer.
Evelyn did.
“It says Mrs. Villalba is the sole owner.”
Laura’s eyes flashed. “That’s absurd. She’s sixty-eight.”
Carmen looked at her.
“What does that have to do with owning a house?”
Laura reddened.
Daniel flipped another page.
His voice lowered.
“You paid cash?”
Carmen did not answer.
He found the payout document before she could decide whether silence was kinder.
Lottery award distribution.
His face collapsed.
Laura snatched at the page, but Evelyn stepped between them.
“Do not touch my client’s documents.”
“Client?” Daniel repeated, almost laughing. “She’s my mother.”
“She is also a legal adult whose property is not yours.”
The sentence landed like a slap.
Inés moved closer to Carmen’s side of the gate, still outside but near enough to hear.
“Grandma,” she whispered, “are you leaving us?”
Carmen’s heart cracked.
She crouched slowly so they were eye level.
“No, sweetheart. I’m leaving the house where I was not treated kindly. That is different.”
Daniel made a sharp sound.
“Don’t say that to her.”
Carmen stood.
“I will not lie to her so you can feel honorable.”
His face twisted.
“After everything I’ve done for you—”
“What have you done, Daniel?”
The question stopped him.
Carmen kept her voice calm.
“You let your wife turn my room into storage. You let her use me as unpaid help. You let your daughter believe I lived with you because I needed managing. Then when I bought something for myself, you tried to take it.”
Laura snapped, “We gave you a home.”
Carmen looked at her suitcase on the pavement.
“You gave me a room you slowly filled with boxes.”
For once, Laura had no quick answer.
Evelyn handed Daniel a second document.
“Mrs. Villalba has also updated her estate plan. Any attempt to coerce access to this property, misuse her funds, or represent yourselves as beneficiaries of this home will trigger disinheritance provisions.”
Daniel stared.
“Inheritance?”
