Chapter 4 - The Plan Daniel Thought Was His
Daniel found out about the house before he found out about the money.
That was the mistake Carmen made.
She had hired an attorney, Evelyn Pierce, to help structure the lottery payout, protect the funds, and buy property quietly. Evelyn was direct, practical, and allergic to sentimental financial decisions.
“Do not tell your family until documents are complete,” she advised.
Carmen nodded.
Then told Inés.
Not everything.
Only that Grandma might soon have a house with a garden and a room where Inés could sleep over anytime.
Children are not banks.
They leak joy.
A week later, Laura asked at dinner, “What house is Inés talking about?”
Carmen tried to answer lightly.
“I’ve been looking at places.”
Daniel looked up.
“Places?”
“For myself.”
The silence at the table changed.
Laura set down her fork.
Daniel laughed once.
“Mom, you don’t need a whole house. You can barely handle stairs.”
“This one is mostly one level.”
“You bought a house?”
“Not yet.”
His eyes narrowed.
“With what money?”
Carmen should have lied.
She did not.
“I had some good luck.”
That was enough.
Daniel became charming first.
Then concerned.
Then involved.
He wanted to see the listing. Review the inspection. Talk to the agent. Compare financing. “Make sure no one takes advantage of you.”
Within forty-eight hours, he had decided the house made more sense for his family.
“It’s too big for one person,” he said.
Laura nodded. “And it’s in the best school zone. Inés deserves that.”
“Inés already has a school,” Carmen said.
“A better one would change her life.”
Daniel said, “We can all live there. You’ll have the downstairs suite.”
Carmen stared at him.
“The downstairs suite?”
“It’s practical.”
Laura smiled. “You won’t be alone. And we’ll manage the property.”
Manage.
Carmen heard the word for what it was.
Take.
She said no.
Daniel did not accept it because Daniel had forgotten she was allowed to refuse him.
For the next two weeks, the pressure intensified. He wanted to be added to the purchase documents “for emergency purposes.” He wanted access to the payout schedule. He wanted Evelyn’s phone number. He wanted to meet the realtor. Laura began referring to the house as “our new place” in front of Inés.
Carmen finally told them clearly.
“I am buying the house for myself. You are not moving in.”
That night, Daniel told her she was selfish.
The next morning, Laura packed Carmen’s suitcase and left it by the front door.
Daniel pointed at it and said, “If you’re so independent, go be independent somewhere else.”
Carmen looked at the suitcase.
Then at her son.
Then at her granddaughter watching from the hallway.
She said nothing.
