Chapter 6 - ASHLEY’S VIDEOS

I reported the account to the bank’s fraud department.
I placed freezes with the major credit bureaus.
I hired an attorney named Dana Pierce who specialized in elder financial exploitation and complex family fraud.
Dana disliked dramatic language.
That made me trust her.
“Your son being cruel at dinner is morally relevant,” she said. “It is not evidence he opened the account.”
“I understand.”
“The phone number is evidence.”
“Yes.”
“The electronic records are evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Transfers to his business are evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Now we build from that.”
Ashley supplied the next piece herself.
Not intentionally.
When she realized the birthday-party video was not making her look good, she deleted it from her public account.
But several relatives had already received clips.
My niece Hannah sent me the full video Ashley had shared in the family group.
It started twenty-seven minutes before Daniel brought out the dog bowl.
Most of it was ordinary.
People eating.
Talking.
Laughing.
Then, while Ashley was filming decorations, Daniel’s voice could be heard from the kitchen.
“Did Dad ever notice the credit thing?”
Ashley answered.
“No. He doesn’t check anything.”
Daniel laughed.
“Good.”
Then Ashley:
“Just make sure his phone doesn’t get alerts.”
Daniel:
“It goes to mine.”
The camera had been pointing at balloons.
Neither of them realized the microphone had captured the conversation.
Dana listened twice.
Then once more.
She did not smile.
“Keep the original file.”
The joke video had become evidence.
The account suddenly had context.
They knew I did not know.
May you like
They deliberately routed alerts away from me.
And Ashley had documented it before filming me being served from a dog bowl.
