Chapter 10 - CONSEQUENCES AT HUMAN SPEED
There was no dramatic arrest at the birthday table.
No detective kicked down Daniel’s door the next morning.
Financial cases do not move like that.
The bank completed its fraud review.
Electronic records were preserved.
The disputed debt was removed from my responsibility pending final resolution.
My credit required months of cleanup.
The bank referred the matter to law enforcement.
Investigators interviewed me, Daniel, Ashley, and financial employees.
Mercer HomeWorks entered a formal restructuring and eventually ceased operating.
Several legitimate customers suffered losses.
That part mattered.
Daniel’s decisions had consequences beyond our family.
He had used new money to cover old obligations.
Homeowners were left with unfinished work.
Subcontractors were unpaid.
I refused to repay them all.
That was the hardest boundary.
Some of those people deserved money.
But if I stepped in again, the structure would remain exactly the same.
Dana helped me separate compassion from liability.
Where I had personally guaranteed something, I honored it.
Where I had not, Daniel’s creditors dealt with Daniel.
The criminal investigation ultimately focused on identity theft, false financial representations, and unauthorized use of my information.
Ashley cooperated earlier than Daniel.
Her involvement brought consequences of its own.
Daniel eventually entered a negotiated resolution rather than take every issue to trial.
There were restitution requirements, financial restrictions, probationary consequences, and professional damage that ended his ability to return immediately to the contracting business he once controlled.
I did not celebrate.
He was still my son.
Consequences do not become joyful simply because they are deserved.
