Chapter 4 - What the Doorbell Camera Recorded
Travis told police that Noah had swung the bat first.
He said he grabbed it away and the child fell.
The entryway told a different story.
The wooden bat carried only Travis’s fingerprints.
Noah’s dropped phone had recorded part of the encounter after the call ended.
His small voice could be heard asking for his medicine and begging Travis to stop.
Then there was the sound of a hard strike against furniture, followed by Noah crying that his arm hurt.
The most important evidence came from Mrs. Dalton across the street.
Her doorbell camera faced Lena’s front porch.
It showed Travis stepping outside twenty minutes before Noah called me.
He carried the bat.
He practiced two swings in the yard.
Then he returned inside.
It also captured Lena leaving earlier that afternoon while Noah clung to her coat.
The audio was faint, but his words could be understood.
“Please don’t leave me with him.”
Lena pulled her coat free and walked to her car.
She did not look back.
Investigators recovered messages between her and Travis.
That morning, he wrote:
He needs to learn you’re not always going to rescue him.
Lena replied:
Just don’t scare him too much.
She had not ordered Travis to hurt Noah.
But she knew he intended to frighten a four-year-old child into obedience and left anyway.
