Chapter 3 - The Thing Lena Had Not Told Me

I reached the house four minutes after the first patrol car.

An officer stopped me at the edge of the driveway until paramedics carried Noah outside.

He was awake.

That was all I could see at first.

Awake.

Breathing.

Calling for me.

I ran beside the stretcher.

“I’m here, buddy.”

“Uncle Derek came.”

“I know.”

“He made Travis drop it.”

Noah’s arm was not broken, but imaging later showed deep bruising and a hairline fracture near the wrist. Doctors also found older bruises along his upper arm in different stages of healing.

That discovery changed everything.

Lena sat in the hospital waiting area with her coat still unbuttoned.

“How long?” I asked.

She looked at the floor.

“I didn’t know he was using a bat.”

“That was not my question.”

Her silence answered me.

Travis had begun what he called discipline several weeks earlier.

Grabbing Noah too hard.

Making him stand facing a wall.

Taking away meals when he cried.

Lena had seen some of it.

She told herself Travis was stricter than she was.

She told herself Noah exaggerated because he wanted his parents back together.

Then Travis began insisting that she leave Noah alone with him so they could “build respect.”

That afternoon, Lena went to a job interview across town.

She knew Noah had begged her not to go.

She went anyway.

“I thought Travis was trying to help,” she whispered.

“No. You thought admitting the truth would force you to change your life.”

She began crying.

I did not comfort her.

My son was down the hallway learning that adults could see harm and still call it misunderstanding.
