Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE THEY HAD ALREADY PROMISED
The plan was more reckless than sophisticated.
Lucas had formed a development company eighteen months earlier.
It was overextended.
Two projects were delayed.
One lender had refused additional financing without stronger guarantees.
At the same time, Lucas and Sophia had purchased a lot in a luxury development.
They planned to build a house.
A very expensive one.
The architect was hired.
Design work started.
Deposits paid.
But construction financing remained uncertain.
Lucas believed the River Oaks property could solve several problems.
If Clara contributed the house to a family entity, its equity could support financing.
Clara refused.
So Lucas created the appearance that she had changed her mind.
The documents presented to Kenneth Doyle included a consent page bearing Clara’s name.
The signature looked good.
It should.
Lucas had years of birthday cards, family forms, and estate copies containing Clara’s handwriting.
But it was not hers.
Sophia signed as a witness to part of the package.
Lucas signed as manager of the family entity.
Kenneth notarized signatures he actually witnessed.
He later insisted he had been told Clara’s separate consent had already been properly executed.
The transaction had not yet transferred Clara’s house.
That mattered enormously.
The package was incomplete.
Title review had raised questions.
Nothing final had been recorded.
But Lucas had already represented to lenders that the property was entering the structure.
He was using momentum again.
Create enough paperwork.
Promise enough people.
Make refusal feel impossible.
Exactly what he had done to Clara at lunch.
The wedding-day meeting was intended to complete another step before Clara realized the process was moving.
Martin looked at me.
“Why do you think Lucas mentioned footage?”
“Because he knew this meeting happened here.”
“And he knew you’d just noticed the camera.”
I nodded.
The glue prank had frightened him for the wrong reason.
He was not worried that people would discover Sophia tried to humiliate Clara.

Sometimes people are caught by consequences they never considered connected.
