Chapter 3 - THE DOCUMENT CLARA REFUSED TO SIGN
Two months before the wedding, Lucas asked Clara for a favor.
He invited her to lunch.
No Sophia.
No me.
That alone made her suspicious.
He told Clara he was working on a small development partnership and needed temporary proof of additional assets to satisfy a lender.
According to Lucas, nothing would actually happen to the River Oaks house.
No sale.
No mortgage.
No transfer.
He only wanted Clara to sign a document allowing it to appear on a statement connected to a family holding company.
Clara called me from the restaurant parking lot.
“Dad, does any of that make sense?”
“No.”
“That’s what I thought.”
“Did you sign?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Lucas became angry when she refused.
He called me that night.
“She’s acting like I’m trying to steal her house.”
“What exactly did you ask her to sign?”
“A temporary authorization.”
“For what?”
“It’s complicated.”
“That usually means I’m going to dislike the simple version.”
He sighed.
“Dad, I’m building something.”
“So build it with what belongs to you.”
“You don’t understand leverage.”
“I understand signatures.”
He went quiet.
Then he said something I remembered later.
“Clara has a four-million-dollar asset sitting there doing nothing.”
“It’s her house.”
“She doesn’t even live in it.”
“That changes nothing.”
“You always protect her.”
“No. I’m telling you not to use property you don’t own.”
He hung up.
Clara assumed that ended it.
So did I.
The following week, Sophia apologized to her.
Not for the house argument.
For everything.
The little comments.
The tension.
The years of competition.
She invited Clara to be part of the wedding party.
Clara accepted.
I remember thinking marriage was making Sophia more mature.

Because while Sophia was inviting Clara into the wedding, Lucas was apparently searching for another way to get around her refusal.
