Chapter 7 - WHAT VICTORIA REALLY WANTED

Victoria did not want the house most.
That was the next truth.
She wanted control over Alejandro’s military benefit structure because it connected to something older.
His father’s estate.
Alejandro’s father, Mateo Santos, had died six years earlier after a long illness. The official family story was that Mateo left everything to Victoria and “trusted her to distribute things fairly.”
Alejandro never challenged it.
Not because he believed her.
Because he was tired.
Grief makes exhaustion look like peace.
But Lucia found an old trust reference in the forged benefits packet.
One line.
One account number.
One name:
Mateo Santos Family Survivorship Trust.
Alejandro had never heard of it.
Neither had I.
Victoria had.
Her face gave her away before the records did.
Lucia requested documents from the original estate attorney.
By morning, the truth was clear.
Mateo had not left everything to Victoria.
He had created a trust for both sons.
Alejandro’s share had been preserved because Mateo worried Victoria and Ricardo would consume it before Alejandro ever needed it.
The trigger for distribution was specific.
Marriage.
Military retirement.
Serious injury.
Or death.
If Alejandro died without a spouse recognized in good standing, Victoria could petition for family administration.
If Elena had “surrendered marital interest,” Victoria’s path improved.
That was why I had to sign.
Not just for the house.
Not just for the accounts.
For Mateo’s hidden trust.
Ricardo exploded when he found out.
“You said Dad cut him out!”
Victoria slapped the table.
“Be quiet.”
Alejandro stared at his mother.
“All these years, you told me Dad left me nothing.”
“He left you enough.”
“You hid it.”
“I protected it.”
“For Ricardo?”
“For the family.”
Alejandro laughed once.
A sound with no humor in it.
“You always say family when you mean yourself.”
Victoria looked wounded.
That used to work on him.
It did not work anymore.
She tried one more weapon.
“Elena turned you against us.”
Alejandro looked at the phone.
The documents.
The forged signature.
The watch on Ricardo’s wrist.
“No, Mother.”
His voice was calm.
“You finally showed me what she survived.”
For the first time, Victoria had no answer.
Because there are lies that depend on distance.
May you like
Alejandro had been gone long enough for her to build them.
But he had come home early enough to watch them fall.
