Chapter 5 - THE CALL ALEJANDRO DID NOT MAKE TO HIS MOTHER

Alejandro did not storm into the garden.

That surprised me.

I expected fury.

I expected shouting.

I expected the kind of confrontation Victoria could twist into proof that soldiers came home unstable and wives lied under stress.

Alejandro did none of that.

He sat beside me on the bed and called Captain Morales from his unit’s legal assistance office.

Then he called our family attorney, Lucia Navarro.

Then the bank.

Then the county recorder.

Then a military benefits liaison.

He used the same voice for all of them.

Clear.

Controlled.

Deadly calm.

“My wife signed documents under coercive circumstances.”

“My signature appears on a packet I did not sign.”

“My family members may have attempted unauthorized access to military benefits.”

“Preserve all records.”

“Do not speak to Victoria Santos or Ricardo Santos without counsel present.”

Downstairs, the garden laughter continued for another fourteen minutes.

I counted.

Fourteen minutes between Alejandro finding the forged packet and Victoria realizing he had not returned to the patio.

Then her heels clicked in the hallway.

Ricardo came behind her.

“Alejandro?” Victoria called sweetly. “Everyone is waiting.”

He looked at me.

“Do you want them in here?”

“No.”

That was the first choice anyone had given me in days.

Alejandro stood and stepped into the hallway, closing the bedroom door halfway behind him.

I could still hear.

Victoria’s voice sharpened instantly.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling counsel.”

Silence.

Ricardo laughed once.

“For what?”

Alejandro said, “For the papers Elena was forced to sign.”

Victoria gasped as if insulted.

“Forced? That girl has been unstable since you left.”

“Do not call my wife that.”

“Your wife nearly lost this house.”

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“You tried to take it.”

Ricardo stepped closer.

“You don’t know what she’s been doing.”

“I know what you’ve been doing.”

Then Alejandro said something that made them both quiet.

“I found the benefits packet.”

Victoria whispered, “What packet?”

Wrong answer.

Alejandro knew it.

She should have denied knowing any packet existed.

Instead, she chose the wrong lie too quickly.

Behind the door, I closed my eyes.

For the first time in days, I felt the ground beneath me.

Not safe yet.

But real.

May you like

Alejandro was not asking them what happened because he needed answers.

He was letting them create evidence.
