Chapter 4 - The Family Already Knew
Audrey did not confront them that night.
That decision saved her.
Instead, she called Lenora Pike, the attorney who had helped structure her company and protect the Oakhaven estate after her parents’ financial collapse. Lenora answered on the third ring, listened without interrupting, and said the sentence Audrey needed most.
“Do not warn them before we trace the money.”
Over the next sixteen days, Audrey became two people.
Publicly, she was quiet. She sent one polite message to Brooke.
Wishing you and the baby health.
Brooke replied with a heart emoji.
Gavin came home twice, both times smelling faintly of hospital flowers and expensive cologne. He tried to act burdened, as if Audrey’s silence was making things harder for him.
“We need to talk like adults,” he said.
Audrey looked at him across the kitchen island. “About your son?”
His eyes flickered.
That tiny reaction told her he had already heard Brooke use the phrase.
Our son.
He said, “It’s complicated.”
“It usually is when people lie.”
He left before midnight.
Privately, Audrey worked with Lenora and a forensic accountant. They found the IVF fund transfers first. A payment marked as medical support had been routed through a private billing service and used toward Brooke’s VIP maternity package, specialist fees, and a luxury postpartum suite. Gavin’s authorization appeared on one form. Diane’s email appeared in an approval chain claiming Audrey had agreed because “the family needed privacy.”
Then came the company shares.
Martin had used a package of outdated corporate documents to represent that he still held advisory authority in Audrey’s firm. He pledged a portion of her minority expansion shares as collateral for a loan to save his failing import business. The lender had not completed enforcement yet, but the attempt alone was enough to trigger legal action.
Audrey stared at the report when Lenora slid it across the desk.
“My father signed this?”
“Yes.”
“And my mother knew?”
Lenora pointed to the email trail.
Diane had not simply known. She had helped frame the story.
Brooke had taken Audrey’s husband, worn Audrey’s diamond, and used Audrey’s fertility money to deliver a child she planned to move into Audrey’s home.
