Chapter 3 - THREE DAYS

At the regional hospital, Dr. Evans confirmed that Helen had been in the pit for at least three days.

She was severely dehydrated, hypothermic from the cold nights despite the daytime heat, and suffering from a cracked rib and bruising along both legs. Her injuries were consistent with a fall, but the marks around one wrist suggested someone had restrained her before she went over the edge.

Laura did not come to the hospital.

She sent one message:

Daniel is exaggerating again. Mom wanders when she gets upset.

For months, she had been preparing people to believe that.

The market manager had been told Helen was forgetting orders.

Her church friends heard she had started leaving the stove on.

A pharmacy technician said Laura recently asked how families obtained control of medication for an elderly parent who refused help.

None of those stories matched the woman who still calculated food costs in her head and remembered which market customers preferred dark meat.

When Helen woke fully, she asked me to close the hospital door.

“Laura brought papers on Monday.”

“What papers?”

“She said they were for the quarry company. Brian said if I signed, everyone would be secure.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Her voice weakened.

“They kept saying I had already promised the money.”

“What happened after you refused?”

Helen stared toward the window.

“Brian took my phone. Laura said they were driving me to a doctor because I was confused.”

They did not drive toward Lexington.

They drove to the abandoned quarry road.

Brian stopped beside the drainage pit and demanded Helen sign a deed transferring management authority over the property to Laura. When she tried to walk toward the highway, he grabbed her wrist.

Helen pulled away.

She lost her balance near the edge.

Laura watched her fall.

“Did they try to help you?”

Helen closed her eyes.

“Brian looked down. Laura told him not to climb in.”

“Why?”

“She said if they called anyone, the papers would never go through.”

My sister had not pushed our mother into the pit.

She had made a decision after the fall that was just as deliberate.

She left her there.
