Chapter 2 - THE LAND BEHIND THE MARKET
Our father, Amos Carter, had worked thirty-nine years at the Maple Ridge limestone quarry.
When the company closed, he used his retirement money to purchase eighteen acres surrounding the old southern access road. The land was rough, uneven, and nearly worthless to anyone who did not understand what lay beneath it.
Amos understood.
The narrow Carter property controlled the only safe route from the county highway to the largest undeveloped section of the quarry. Without access across our mother’s land, reopening the limestone operation would require blasting a new road through the mountain at enormous cost.
After Amos died, Helen inherited everything.
She never treated the land as a fortune. She rented one field to a hay farmer and used a small spring-fed section for vegetables. The fried chicken stand at the Sunday market paid most of her ordinary expenses.
Six months before I found her, Ridgeway Materials offered Helen $1.8 million for a permanent access easement and the right to conduct limited limestone extraction near the old quarry boundary.
The offer divided the family immediately.
Laura saw a new house, private-school tuition, and a chance for her husband Brian to escape the debts from his failing roofing company.
I saw environmental reports, road traffic, and a contract our mother needed time to understand.
Helen saw the creek where Amos had taught us to catch crawfish.
“I’m not signing until they guarantee the water stays clean,” she told us.
Laura called her sentimental.
Brian called her confused.
I was working on an automotive plant expansion in Detroit and trusted myself to review the documents later.
Later was a dangerous word.
While I was gone, Laura convinced Ridgeway’s local representative that Helen intended to approve the deal. Brian received a private advance through an intermediary company, using the expected easement payment as the basis for repayment.
That advance bought the red pickup in the family photographs.
