Chapter 7 - VANESSA'S QUESTION

Vanessa listened to Diane without interrupting.

That was worse than yelling.

When Diane finished, Vanessa asked:

“You looked me in the face and said no.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Emma.”

“Yes.”

“You bought her birthday gifts.”

“Yes.”

“You told me Rachel was emotionally unstable.”

Diane winced.

“I said dependent.”

“No. You said unstable.”

Diane closed her eyes.

Vanessa had saved the text.

Of course she had.

Six years earlier.

Diane: Rachel is unstable right now. Travis is trying to help without encouraging it. Do not let this derail treatment.

Megan stared at her mother.

“That is worse.”

“Yes.”

Diane's voice broke.

“I know.”

Vanessa stood.

For a moment Megan thought she would leave.

Instead she looked at Megan.

“Do you know why I hated you after your divorce?”

Megan's shoulders tightened.

“I assumed personality.”

Vanessa almost smiled.

Then didn't.

“You left Aaron.”

“Yes.”

“Everybody told you staying would be easier.”

“Yes.”

“You still left.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked toward the nursery gifts stacked by Megan's front door because several relatives had dropped them off after the canceled shower.

“I thought you were selfish.”

Megan said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“I thought marriage meant not letting one person's mistake destroy the whole thing.”

“That wasn't one mistake.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew then too.”

Vanessa's face changed.

Fair.

She had known Aaron's affair lasted more than a year.

Still judged Megan for leaving.

Why?

Not only because Diane encouraged it.

Because Vanessa needed a world where staying made you stronger than leaving.

She had already been ignoring things in her own marriage.

Late nights.

A woman's name appearing too often in Travis's calendar.

The voicemail.

The Westbury restaurant receipt.

Megan's false alibi.

Diane's lie.

Vanessa accepted each explanation because the alternative made her feel like Megan.

And Vanessa had built an entire identity around not being Megan.

Megan said:

“You humiliated me because I left a cheating man while you were protecting yourself from the possibility you married one.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.”

No excuse.

Then she added:

“That still does not make what you did nine years ago nothing.”

Megan nodded.

“No.”

“You helped him lie.”

“Yes.”

“Would you have done it if you'd known?”

“No.”

“Would you have asked more questions if Travis hadn't paid for your divorce lawyer?”

Megan stopped.

There.

Her own part.

“No.”

Vanessa waited.

Megan corrected herself.

“I don't know.”

Better.

She had needed Travis.

Needed money.

Needed a sibling firmly on her side after Aaron spent months telling people Megan was paranoid.

When Travis asked for an alibi, Megan gave him loyalty without curiosity.

That had consequences she never intended.

Still consequences.

Vanessa picked up her coat.

Before leaving, she looked at Logan.

He was sitting at the far end of the room with headphones around his neck, clearly pretending not to listen.

“Logan.”

He looked up.

“I shouldn't have said what I said about your mom.”

He waited.

Vanessa continued.

“And you should not have had to be the person who told me.”

Logan shrugged.

“I wanted to.”

“That doesn't mean you should've had to.”

He considered that.

Then:

“I’m not sorry he got caught.”

Vanessa almost smiled.

“Neither am I.”

She left.

Diane followed twenty minutes later.

Megan thought the night was done.

Then Logan appeared in the kitchen carrying his phone.

“I forgot something.”

Megan looked at him.

“What?”

“The first time I saw Uncle Travis at the school…”

He opened a photograph.

Not Travis.

A poster in the auditorium lobby.

Northwood Science Night.

Sponsor names.

One:

Diane Harper Family Education Fund.

Megan stared.

“Grandma sponsors Emma's school?”

Logan nodded.

Then:

“Since 2018.”

Six years.

Diane had not merely sent birthday cards.

May you like

She had built an entire respectable path for supporting her hidden granddaughter without anyone asking why.

And somebody had helped her keep it off the family's normal records.
