Chapter 13 - MEGAN'S STATEMENT

The family trust had one administrative problem.

Emma was not listed.

Not because the trust owned her.

Because Frank Harper had created an education provision for all legally acknowledged grandchildren.

Diane never added Emma.

Why?

Adding her required circulating an annual beneficiary schedule to three family trustees.

One was Vanessa.

Diane chose secrecy instead.

She paid for Emma herself.

The money issue was harmless.

The governance choice was not.

After the truth surfaced, Diane asked Rachel:

“Do you want Emma included?”

Rachel answered:

“Ask Emma's lawyer.”

Good.

A child-rights attorney reviewed it.

The trust benefit was legitimate.

School and future college support.

No family-control condition.

Emma was added through sealed administrative records.

Vanessa signed the acknowledgment.

Her hand shook.

Still signed.

Then Megan was asked for a formal statement concerning the nine-year-old alibi.

Her lawyer again reminded her:

“You can limit this to what you know.”

Megan did.

She wrote:

Travis came to her apartment that afternoon.

Left around six.

Called later.

Asked her to say he remained until midnight.

Megan knowingly gave Vanessa false information.

Megan did not know about Rachel.

Megan suspected Travis was hiding something but did not ask.

Why?

She included that too.

At the time I was financially and emotionally dependent on my brother's support during my divorce. I chose loyalty over accuracy.

It embarrassed her.

Good.

Truth was not supposed to become comfortable because she finally told it.

Then she added:

This statement should not be used to imply I knew about the affair. I did not.

Specific.

No self-flagellation.

Vanessa's lawyer accepted it.

Cedar North's counsel accepted the relevant part.

Diane read it only because Megan chose to show her.

Her mother looked at her.

“You didn't have to include the divorce retainer.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

“Because otherwise I make myself look braver than I was.”

Diane stared.

Then nodded.

Later, Logan asked whether he had caused everything.

“No.”

Megan answered immediately.

“You exposed something.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

She sat beside him.

“The affair caused the marriage problem. The lies caused the family problem. Telling the truth in a room full of people made the fallout messier.”

He looked guilty.

Megan did not tell him he had done nothing wrong.

That would be another easy lie.

“You should have told me privately.”

“I know.”

“But you did not create Uncle Travis's second family.”

“I know.”

“Emma isn't a secret because of you.”

“I know.”

“Vanessa's baby isn't in danger because of you.”

He looked at her.

“Is the baby okay?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa's doctor had checked.

Everything normal.

Logan nodded.

Then:

“Do I apologize to Emma?”

Megan thought.

“You don't contact her unless her mom says it's okay.”

Rachel did.

Logan wrote a note.

Not an apology for naming her.

An apology for making the adults' secret explode publicly without thinking about what attention could reach Emma.

Rachel gave it to her.

Emma wrote back:

It's okay. Please don't tell people at school.

Logan showed Megan.

“That’s it?”

“That’s enough.”

He folded the note.

May you like

Kept it.

Children did not need to become symbols of adult accountability.
