Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE DOOR

I left the barbecue without cleaning the blood from the patio stones.
That alone shocked my family.
Isolda followed me into the kitchen and said guests would think I was trying to punish everyone. Valora stood behind her, still filming, while Jet spun the ball in his glove.
“Tell them what happened,” I said.
“We already did,” Valora replied. “He was playing.”
Ms. Avery entered through the glass door.
“Was he?”
Valora lowered the phone.
Avery had watched part of the incident from inside. She had also noticed the backyard camera. With my mother’s reluctant permission as the homeowner, she opened the security application on her tablet.
The recording began thirty seconds before the throw.
Jet stood beside the bucket of baseballs, glancing repeatedly toward Valora. My sister crouched beside him and said something too low for the outdoor microphone to capture clearly. Then she pointed toward me.
Jet asked, “Hard or funny?”
Valora answered, “Just enough to make her lose it.”
The camera showed him selecting a ball, stepping closer, and waiting for her nod.
Nobody in the kitchen spoke.
Valora recovered first.
“You’re twisting a joke between a mother and her child.”
Avery paused the footage on the frame where Jet’s arm remained extended and my face had just turned toward the ball.
“That is not how an accident looks.”
Isolda stepped between them. “Simone, you came here for trust documents. This has nothing to do with them.”
Avery looked toward me.
Then she looked at Valora’s phone, still aimed in our direction.
“I’m beginning to think it has everything to do with them.”
Valora ended the livestream.
