Chapter 3 - THE MORNING MY BODY SAID NO

On the wedding morning, I woke with pain beneath my ribs.

At first, I blamed the rehearsal dinner. Linda had criticized the bridesmaids for eating bread before photographs, and I had barely touched my meal.

By seven, the pain had moved lower.

By eight, I was sweating through the robe Megan gave me.

I tried calling the front desk for medication, but I dropped the phone before completing the request. Daniel found me curled beside the bathroom vanity.

“We’re going to the emergency room.”

“You have to escort your mother.”

“I’m not leaving you like this.”

“Megan needs you.”

“You need a doctor.”

I tried to stand.

The room went dark.

At the hospital, scans confirmed a ruptured appendix and spreading infection. The surgeon explained that another delay could have caused sepsis and serious complications.

Daniel called Megan before I entered the operating room.

She was upset, frightened, and already dressed for photographs. But she told him to stay with me.

“Claire didn’t choose this,” she said.

Linda took the phone from her.

She accused me of manufacturing the crisis because I did not want Daniel signing the family documents. She demanded that he return before the ceremony and said a good husband would understand when his wife was being manipulative.

Daniel ended the call.

The operation lasted almost two hours.

While I was unconscious, Linda called him sixteen times.

Her final message said:

The lender leaves at midnight. Do not let Claire destroy Megan’s future because she wants control of yours.

Daniel read it beside my hospital bed.

That was when he finally understood the emergency she cared about was not my appendix.

It was his signature.
