Chapter 5 - The Glass House of the Carters

Diane let out a soft, condescending chuckle, resting one hand on her hip while adjusting a pearl earring with the other.
"Don't be dramatic, Emily," Diane scoffed, her tone dismissive and casually cruel. "You think you can just march into my house, put your hands on me, and make demands? You forget whose name is on the deed to your apartment. You forget who pays your husband’s salary at the firm. You are a lower-middle-class girl from Ohio who married into the Carter family. Without us, you are nothing."
"My son is bruised, Diane!" Emily shouted, her voice shaking the glass doors of the patio window. "Look at his legs! Look at his arms! You had him chained to a floor like an animal!"
"He is spoiled!" Diane snapped back, her eyes flashing with cold authority. "He was crying because I wouldn't give him chocolate before dinner! He threw a tantrum and knocked over his bowl! I merely disciplined him the way children in proper families used to be disciplined before soft, hysterical mothers like you ruined society!"
"You put a dog chain around a three-year-old’s neck!" Emily cried out, tears of rage brimming in her eyes. "That isn't discipline! That is sickening, sadistic abuse!"
"You call it whatever you want, dear," Diane smiled thinly, taking another half-step forward until her face was inches from Emily’s. "Who do you think anyone is going to believe? You? A tired, overworked nurse with a history of postpartum anxiety? Or me? A philanthropist, a board member of the children’s hospital, and the matriarch of the Carter estate?"
Diane leaned in closer, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper meant only for Emily’s ears.
"You take one step to the police, Emily, and I will have my lawyers draft custody papers by midnight. My son, Richard, will sign whatever I put in front of him. We will declare you unfit, we will take Leo away from you permanently, and you will never see his face again. Do you understand me?"
Emily looked at the woman standing before her—at the pristine cream cardigan, the glittering pearls, the perfectly applied lipstick, and the utter black void of empathy behind her eyes.

For months, Emily had walked on eggshells around Diane, intimidated by the Carter family's immense wealth, their political connections, and the subtle, passive-aggressive control Diane exerted over her son, Richard.
But as Emily felt little Leo’s tear-stained face pressed against her neck, listening to his fragile breathing, the fear that had held her captive for three years completely dissolved.
