Chapter 2 - The Fracture on the Quartz

The sound of Emily’s voice echoed off the smooth quartz countertops and high ceilings.
Instead of dropping the chain or stepping back in shame, Diane’s face hardened into a mask of bitter, unyielding arrogance. She tightened her jaw, raised her chin, and gave the silver dog chain another cruel, sharp yank, deliberately trying to force the three-year-old child down toward the stainless-steel tray.
"He needs to learn his place, Emily!" Diane barked, her voice filled with decades of unexamined authority.
That second yank broke whatever remaining strand of composure Emily possessed. A primal, protective fury surged through her veins. Emily didn't pause to unbutton her coat or remove her boots. She covered the ten feet between the foyer threshold and the kitchen island in three explosive, violent strides.
Before Diane could pull the chain a third time, Emily launched her entire body weight forward, extending both hands and shoving Diane directly in the chest with ferocious, unstoppable force.
The impact tore Diane’s leather loafers right off their traction on the polished floorboards. She let out a sharp, shocked gasp as she was sent airborne backward, stumbling wildly until her back crashed hard into the edge of the heavy mahogany dining table behind the island.
The dining table groaned against the floorboards, shifting three inches, while a crystal water pitcher sitting on its center surface wobbled violently, sending a splash of water over the polished wood.
Diane clutched her waist, gasping for breath, her expensive cream cardigan twisted around her shoulders, her eyes wide with shock at being physically struck in her own home.
Emily didn't give her mother-in-law a second glance.
The instant Diane’s grip slipped from the silver links, Emily dropped heavily onto her knees on the cold porcelain tile beside her son. Her hands were shaking violently, her palms wet with cold sweat, as she reached out with both hands to grab the silver dog-style chain looped around Leo’s small neck.
"It’s okay, baby... Mommy’s here... Mommy’s got you..." Emily gasped, her voice trembling between wild panic and soothing warmth as her fingers fumbled with the cold metal links.
With a swift, desperate pull, she loosened the heavy silver chain, unhooked the clasp, and ripped the metal off her son’s neck.
Without missing a beat, Emily wound her arm back and threw the silver dog chain with all her strength across the kitchen. The metal links shrieked against the air before smashing into the lower white cabinets near the pantry, clattering onto the floorboards with a loud, harsh metallic racket.

In the same fluid, frantic motion, Emily extended her right boot and kicked the stainless-steel pet-food tray away with explosive force.
The heavy metal bowl slid wildly across the tile floorboards, flipping onto its side as it struck the baseboard near the refrigerator, scattering dry brown kibble in every direction across the spotless white kitchen floor.
