Chapter 6 - MARK’S FACE

Mark read the second page before Daniel did.

I saw it happen.

Daniel was still staring at the paternity result, relief and guilt battling across his face, when Mark leaned over his shoulder and noticed the additional relationship analysis.

His expression changed first.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Then Daniel turned the page.

He read.

Looked at Mark.

Then Margaret.

The family resemblance everyone had used against Lily suddenly turned inward.

Mark had always been Margaret’s favorite.

Her firstborn.

Her pride.

Her proof that the family bloodline was strong.

Daniel had always been compared to him and found slightly lacking.

But the report suggested Mark and Daniel were not full biological brothers.

Daniel’s father, Charles, was inside the party.

Seated by the fireplace.

Eighty years old.

Quiet.

A man who had spent decades letting Margaret speak for the family because silence seemed easier than war.

Daniel looked toward him after reading the old birth record.

That was the moment I understood what the document likely said.

Mark understood too.

He stood very still with the aged envelope in one hand.

Margaret reached for it again.

“Give that to me.”

Mark stepped back.

His voice was low.

“Mom.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

That one word changed his face.

Mark had never told Margaret no in public before.

Daniel unfolded the birth record carefully.

The camera in my memory never needed to show the text.

I saw the truth in his face.

Mark’s birth record did not name Charles as his father.

It named another man.

A man Daniel had heard of only in family whispers.

A business partner from before Margaret married Charles.

A man who vanished from their lives months before Mark was born.

Margaret had spent five years calling my daughter a cheater’s child while hiding the fact that her golden son was born from the very secret she pretended to despise.

The cruelty was not hypocrisy alone.

It was projection sharpened over decades.

She had looked at Lily and seen the accusation she had escaped.

So she punished a child for reminding her of herself.
