Chapter 4 - THE BIRTHDAY INVITATION

The birthday party was for Margaret.

Seventy-five.

She called it a “small family gathering,” which meant forty people, catered appetizers, a balloon arch, and a photographer she pretended not to hire.

I did not want to go.

Daniel begged.

“Just one afternoon.”

“One afternoon where your mother gets to decide whether Lily counts?”

“She won’t say anything.”

“She always says something.”

“I’ll handle it.”

I looked at him for a long time.

“Daniel, handling it after she hurts us is not protection.”

He had no answer.

The lab results were due that Monday.

The party was Saturday.

I considered waiting.

Then my attorney called Friday evening.

“The report came in.”

“And?”

“Daniel is Lily’s biological father.”

I closed my eyes.

Not from surprise.

From exhaustion.

“Anything else?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

That pause changed everything.

The full family review had found an unexpected relationship inconsistency between Daniel and Mark.

They were related.

But not the way full brothers should be.

The lab could not tell the whole story alone.

It could only show that something in the family history did not match the family story.

I asked my attorney whether I should bring the report.

She said:

“Bring it sealed. Don’t open it unless necessary.”

“What does necessary mean?”

“You’ll know.”

I hated how right she was.

The next day, Lily wore her pink dress and twirled in front of the mirror.

“Do I look like a birthday cupcake?”

“The prettiest one.”

“Will Grandma be nice today?”

I knelt in front of her.

“You stay near me or Daddy, okay?”

She nodded.

I should not have gone.

I know that now.

But when you are married into a family that treats cruelty as tradition, you keep attending things because staying away is framed as aggression.

So we went.

And Margaret waited until Lily was alone near the patio door.
