Chapter 4 - BROOKE’S VIDEO

Brooke Miller had spent eighteen days telling herself she had deleted it.

She had deleted the copy from her camera roll.

Cloud backup had other ideas.

Her attorney delivered the original file to police that evening.

Brooke also gave a formal statement.

Not because she suddenly became brave.

Because she had been punched, recorded fighting in public, and just learned Vanessa was apparently communicating with a man hiding in campus tunnels.

Loyalty had limits.

The video began at 9:34 p.m. on the night Emma disappeared.

West Utility Passage.

Concrete walls.

Exposed pipes.

Emergency lighting.

Emma appeared first.

Backpack.

Silver bracelet visible on her left wrist.

Vanessa followed.

“Stop filming.”

Brooke lowered the phone but did not stop recording.

Emma turned.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Vanessa answered:

“You told me you were giving me until Friday.”

“To correct your statement.”

“I did.”

“You corrected six minutes.”

“What does that mean?”

“You admitted you went below. You still said Leah fell after you were already coming out.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“She did.”

Emma looked at her.

“That isn’t what Brooke’s video shows.”

Brooke watching the footage in the interview room closed her eyes.

Lieutenant Brooks kept playing.

A male voice came from farther down the tunnel.

“Emma.”

No man visible yet.

Emma turned.

A broad-shouldered older figure entered the edge of frame.

Work jacket.

Facilities pants.

Face mostly shadowed.

He held a small metal box.

Emma said:

“You brought it?”

“Yes.”

“Original?”

“Paper log. Before they replaced the access controller.”

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“You said you destroyed that.”

The man looked at her.

“I said it was gone.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

Emma reached for the box.

The man pulled it back.

“Not until you promise this goes to a lawyer first.”

Emma looked furious.

“I’m not protecting the university.”

“I’m protecting me.”

That mattered.

He was not a heroic whistleblower.

He was afraid.

Brooke’s video continued.

Vanessa grabbed Emma’s arm.

“You give that to the paper and I’m finished.”

Emma pulled free.

The bracelet snagged against Vanessa’s ring.

The clasp snapped.

The silver chain disappeared onto the concrete floor.

Rachel, watching later, covered her mouth.

There.

The bracelet had broken that night.

Emma did not notice.

She kept arguing.

Then a loud mechanical click came from farther down the tunnel.

Everyone stopped.

A red EXIT indicator changed to green.

The older man stared toward the south corridor.

“I didn’t open that.”

Emma looked at Vanessa.

“Did you tell him?”

Vanessa shook her head.

Brooke whispered:

“Who?”

Emma walked toward the south passage.

Then turned back.

“If he opens the door, I’m done protecting him.”

The recording jolted.

Brooke apparently followed.

At 10:06 p.m., Emma stepped through the south service door.

Alive.

Alone.

Backpack still with her.

She turned toward Vanessa one last time.

“You should tell Rachel before somebody else does.”

Then she left.

Vanessa did not follow.

The older man remained in the tunnel.

Brooke’s recording ended twenty-three seconds later.

Rachel stared at the final frozen frame.

Emma.

Alive at 10:06.

Lieutenant Brooks said:

“This is after the time Vanessa originally told police she last saw Emma.”

Vanessa had claimed she left Emma outside the library at 8:45.

False.

Brooke had claimed the same.

Also false.

But the video proved something else.

They had not dragged Emma away underground.

She had walked out.

Rachel pointed at the older man.

“Who is he?”

Brooke answered through her attorney.

“I only knew him as Mick.”

Brooks already had facilities employment records open.

One name fit.

Michael Avery.

Fifty-five.

Former assistant facilities supervisor.

Placed on administrative suspension seven weeks earlier.

Reason:

Failure to report unauthorized student access to restricted utility infrastructure.

Rachel looked at the screen.

“Where is he now?”

Brooks answered:

“His attorney called ten minutes ago.”

Rachel stared.

“He wants to come in.”

Then Brooks added:

“And he says he was the man under the grate today.”
