Chapter 1 - THE WRONG SISTER

Rachel Carter had learned that humiliation had a sound.

Paper cups hitting pavement.

Plastic forks bouncing under shoes.

A half-full carton of noodles landing against the back of her neck.

She was crossing Hawthorne University’s west walkway when Vanessa Cole came up behind her carrying one of the large outdoor trash bins.

Rachel barely had time to turn.

Vanessa lifted it.

Dumped everything.

Garbage crashed over Rachel’s head and shoulders.

Something wet ran down the back of her jacket.

Students nearby stopped.

One laughed before realizing nobody else was.

Rachel hunched forward in shock.

Vanessa dropped the empty bin.

Then shoved her hard in the shoulder.

Rachel stumbled through the trash.

Her foot slipped on a paper plate.

One knee slammed against the pavement.

Pain shot up her leg.

She stayed there for a second, breathing.

Coffee grounds tangled in her hair.

A crushed food container beside her hand.

Vanessa stood over her.

Brooke Miller remained several yards behind Vanessa, one hand over her mouth, laughing.

Vanessa smiled.

“Your sister should’ve stayed gone.”

Rachel stopped breathing.

The pain in her knee disappeared.

So did the humiliation.

She snapped her head up.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa’s smile weakened.

Rachel planted one hand on the pavement.

Pushed herself upright.

She walked straight toward Vanessa with garbage still hanging from her jacket.

“What did you do to Emma?”

Vanessa grabbed Rachel by the collar.

Hard.

“Stay out of my face.”

She yanked Rachel forward and tried forcing her down again.

Rachel braced.

Twisted her shoulders.

Broke the grip.

Then shoved Vanessa with both hands.

Vanessa staggered backward.

Three steps.

Four.

Her lower back hit a stone bench.

The sound knocked the last of the smile off her face.

Brooke rushed forward from behind Rachel.

Rachel heard shoes.

Turned.

Brooke reached for her hair.

Rachel moved before Brooke could grab it.

One punch.

Brooke’s head snapped sideways.

She spun and dropped into the garbage Vanessa had dumped.

A student shouted:

“Hey!”

Vanessa pushed herself away from the bench.

Charged.

Rachel turned.

Drove a hard kick into Vanessa’s upper body.

Vanessa recoiled.

Lost her balance.

Fell beside the overturned trash bin.

Rachel stood between them.

Breathing hard.

Nobody laughed now.

Vanessa planted both hands on the pavement.

Got one knee under herself.

Then lunged again.

Rachel caught her arm.

Turned with the momentum.

Vanessa hit the walkway hard on her shoulder and side.

Her body slid into the overturned bin.

The plastic container rolled several feet.

Something underneath it flashed in the daylight.

Metal.

A maintenance grate.

Rachel stopped.

So did Vanessa.

A silver bracelet was wedged between two bars.

Thin chain.

Oval clasp.

Three small engraved stars.

Rachel knew every scratch on it.

Emma had worn it since their father gave it to her at sixteen.

Rachel stepped closer.

Her voice changed.

“That’s Emma’s.”

Vanessa looked at the bracelet.

All the anger drained from her face.

“No.”

Rachel looked at her.

Vanessa scrambled up.

She lunged for the grate.

Rachel slapped her hand away.

“What are you doing?”

Vanessa reached again.

Rachel shoved her sideways.

Vanessa fell back onto the pavement.

Rachel crouched.

Pulled the bracelet free.

The clasp was broken.

Black grease coated one side.

Rachel closed her fist around it.

“Where is she?”

Vanessa stared at the grate.

Not Rachel.

The expression on her face was no longer cruelty.

Fear.

Then—

KNOCK.

KNOCK.

Rachel froze.

Two heavy metallic impacts came from somewhere below them.

Brooke stopped pushing herself out of the garbage.

Students backed away.

Rachel looked down through the grate.

Darkness.

Nothing visible.

KNOCK.

A third impact.

The metal grate vibrated beneath Rachel’s shoes.

Vanessa’s entire body went rigid.

Then a man’s calm voice rose from below.

“Vanessa…”

Rachel tightened her fist around Emma’s bracelet.

May you like

The voice continued.

“You brought the wrong sister.”
