Chapter 6 - THE APPROACH OF THE SHADOWS

A concussive, panicked voice suddenly exploded from the downstairs hallway intercom, breaking the tense silence of the dining room with jarring urgency.

“MR. MORETTI!”

It was Marcus, his chief of personal security, shouting through the radio channel with an agitation Alejandro had never heard in ten years of service.

“MR. MORETTI, WE HAVE A BREACH AT THE MAIN GATES! CONVOY INBOUND!”

Alejandro didn't hesitate. In one swift, protective motion, he stepped toward the table and pulled Mateo’s chair back, scooping the four-year-old up into his left arm with practiced, effortless strength.

Elena lunged forward simultaneously, gathering the other three boys against her skirts, her arms wrapping around their shoulders like a mother hen shielding her chicks. The boys didn't cry; they sensed the sudden, electric shift in the room, their dark eyes wide and curious as they clustered tightly against Elena’s white apron.

Alejandro strode to the great casement windows, carrying Mateo against his broad chest.

He looked down the long, winding asphalt driveway that cut through the estate's two-hundred-acre forest.

Cresting the hill, moving at high speed, were three massive, identical black Cadillac Escalades.

They did not slow down for the decorative inner gates; they had already bypassed them. The security vehicles at the outer perimeter had been neutralized or ordered to stand down. The three SUVs moved in tight formation, their heavily tinted windows reflecting the bright afternoon sunlight like polished obsidian, their massive V8 engines producing a low, rhythmic growl that vibrated through the limestone foundations of the house.

Alejandro’s mind raced with cold, mathematical precision.

The estate’s private security was vetted by him personally, but the outer gatehouse fell under the jurisdiction of the Moretti Trust’s corporate administrative budget—managed by the executive committee of the board of directors. For three armored vehicles to penetrate the private grounds without a single alarm sounding meant that someone holding high-level security clearance had signed the authorization code.

Beside him, Elena stood clutching the three remaining boys, her body trembling so violently that the lace trim of her apron fluttered.

She stared out the glass at the approaching black vehicles, her knuckles white against the children’s pale-blue shirts.

She leaned toward Alejandro, her voice a ragged, terrified whisper that barely carried over the hum of the engines outside.

“Someone knows the boys are here,” Elena breathed.

Alejandro looked down at the photograph still clutched in his right hand—at Sofia’s radiant, triumphant smile on the Swiss terrace—then looked out at the three black SUVs coming to a synchronized halt on the circular gravel drive directly beneath the portico.

He realized the terrifying truth: Sofia’s secret had not been breached by accident. The people who had hunted his wife four years ago in Geneva had finally tracked the four boys to the Lake Forest estate.

And they had come to finish what they started.
