Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM OF SOFIA'S LOVE

The words tore through the quiet dining room like shrapnel.

Alejandro took two steps forward, his broad shoulders casting a massive, trembling shadow over the weeping housekeeper.

“She made you promise I would never find them?” Alejandro’s voice rose, vibrating with the ferocious, protective anger of a father who has been robbed of his children’s lives. “I was her husband! I spent millions trying to save her! I sat by her bed every two weeks, holding her hand, listening to her tell me that everything was going to be alright! She knew I wanted a family! She knew my greatest sorrow was that we would never have a child together!”

He gestured wildly toward the table, where the four boys had set their forks down, sensing the deep, volcanic grief rolling off the tall man.

“Four sons, Elena!” Alejandro roared, his voice cracking with anguish. “Four boys who have my blood, my face, my name! And you kept them in the woods like strays? You let them grow up without a father while I walked through this empty house like a ghost?”

“She didn't do it to hurt you, Alejandro!” Elena cried out, looking up at him through her tears, her voice ringing with a fierce, desperate passion. “She did it to save their lives!”

Alejandro stopped. The fury in his dark eyes froze, chilled by the raw, absolute conviction in the housekeeper’s voice.

“Save them?” Alejandro whispered, his jaw clenching. “From what? I command half the logistics in the Midwest! I have three security details, armored cars, private doctors, and enough wealth to buy a small nation! There is no man on earth who could touch my family under this roof!”

“And what about your family outside this roof?” Elena countered, her chest heaving, her eyes blazing with the memory of Sofia’s terror. “Do you remember four years ago, Alejandro? Do you remember the board of directors after your father died? Do you remember the Sterling Trust and the syndicate in New York?”

Alejandro went rigid. A cold, metallic taste flooded his mouth.

Four years ago, following the sudden death of his father, the Moretti conglomerate had been subjected to a predatory, hostile takeover attempt orchestrated by his father’s estranged business partners—the Vance-Sterling syndicate. It had not been a simple corporate dispute; it had been an all-out, bloody war conducted through shell companies, sabotage, and private military contractors. Two of Alejandro’s cargo ships had been burned in port; his personal vehicle had been targeted by an explosive device in the Loop; and his top three financial executives had been systematically pressured or driven into exile.

It had taken Alejandro eighteen months of brutal, sleepless warfare to crush the Vance syndicate, to strip them of their board seats, and to consolidate total, sovereign control over the Moretti empire.

During those eighteen months, Sofia had been in Switzerland.

Alejandro had believed she was safely isolated from the bloodshed, sheltered in the quiet alpine air, fighting her pulmonary disease.

“Sofia found out she was pregnant in Zurich,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she wiped her cheeks with her apron. “The doctors told her the pregnancy would destroy her lungs. They begged her to terminate. They told her that her body couldn't handle carrying one child, let alone four. But she refused. She said God had given her a miracle, and she would see them draw breath even if it cost her her life.”

Alejandro felt a knife twist in his gut. Sofia had knowingly traded her life for the four boys sitting at the table.

“And then,” Elena continued, her hands trembling violently, “she received the reports from Chicago. She saw the news of the bombings. She saw the death threats sent to your office. And then… someone in Geneva approached her clinic.”

Alejandro’s eyes dilated. “Who?”

“She never told me the name,” Elena sobbed. “She only told me that they represented the minority shareholders in the trust—the ones who stood to inherit the entire Moretti maritime estate if you died without an heir. Under your grandfather’s charter, Alejandro… if you die childless, the voting shares revert to the board. But if you have legitimate heirs… the dynasty remains unbroken.”

Alejandro looked from Elena back to the four identical boys.

The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with terrifying, crystalline clarity. Sofia had realized that if the board discovered she was carrying four sons, the children would become targets for assassination before they were even out of the nursery. She had kept the pregnancy completely secret, using private midwives in a remote chalet in Lucerne, ensuring that not a single birth certificate was registered in the United States.

And when she knew she was dying, she had sent Elena back to Chicago with the infants, instructing her to hide them in the secluded caretaker’s cottage on the estate’s outer perimeter—the one place nobody would ever look, because it was hidden in plain sight behind Alejandro’s own walls.

Alejandro looked at Elena, his voice barely audible.

“Who was she protecting them from?” Alejandro asked, the question hanging in the air like a blade.

Elena didn't answer with words.

Suddenly, her gaze darted away from Alejandro. Her head snapped toward the massive, floor-to-ceiling casement windows that overlooked the grand front driveway.

Her face drained of what little color had returned, her eyes widening in sheer, primal horror as she noticed something unexpected moving through the trees.

May you like

She looked back at Alejandro, her voice dropping into a petrified whisper.

“Not from you.”
