Chapter 8 - AMBER’S DECISION
Amber cooperated.
Not immediately.
At first, she insisted Mark told her Sarah knew about the early pickup.
Then investigators showed her the messages.
One from Mark read:
Do not contact Sarah. She’ll ruin the timing.
Another:
Use the standing authorization at school.
Then:
Bring the backpack back with you. Mom thinks Sarah will understand once she sees Chloe’s things.
Amber started crying during the interview.
She said she believed Chloe would be at Evelyn’s house for one night.
She believed Mark was arranging a marital separation.
She knew I had not authorized the pickup.
That was the part she could not explain away.
Why had she done it?
Because Mark was her boss.
Because he told her it was legal.
Because Evelyn treated the entire plan like a family matter.
Because when people with enough confidence give an instruction, ordinary moral questions can start feeling like administrative details.
Amber eventually gave investigators access to her messages and work calendar.
The calendar contained an entry at 1:30 p.m.:
C pickup.
At 4:00:
S meeting.
S.
Sarah.
Me.
The confrontation with the settlement had been scheduled.
My panic had an appointment.
That detail stayed with me more than almost anything else.
Mark had known exactly when Jenna would realize Chloe was gone.
He expected me to call.
Expected confusion.
Expected fear.
Then expected me to come home and negotiate.
He had turned my worst three hours as a mother into a timeline on somebody’s calendar.
Amber testified later that she began realizing how wrong everything was only after seeing me in the driveway.
“You looked like you thought Chloe was dead,” she told me months later.
I did not answer.
She started crying.
“I didn’t understand that he hadn’t told you she was safe.”
“But you knew I didn’t know where she was.”
“Yes.”
That distinction mattered to her.
It did not matter much to me.

Still, her cooperation helped police reconstruct everything quickly.
And her accidental question in the driveway—what if they check the pickup time?—was the reason the entire plan collapsed before Mark could erase or revise the story.
