Chapter 3 - THE NIGHT CHLOE DISAPPEARED

The charity dinner was supposed to begin at seven.
Mark’s company had donated heavily to a pediatric arts program, and we were expected to appear together.
Chloe hated formal events, so she was going to spend the evening with my friend Jenna after school.
That was the plan I had personally confirmed that morning.
Jenna would collect her at three-thirty.
I would pick Chloe up after dinner.
At 4:06, Jenna called.
“Sarah, did plans change?”
I was having my hair finished.
“What do you mean?”
“Chloe wasn’t at school.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“The front office says she was already picked up.”
“By whom?”
“They won’t tell me over the phone.”
I called the school.
They confirmed Chloe had been released to an authorized adult.
“Who?”
The receptionist hesitated.
“Mrs. Harrington, you may want to speak with your husband.”
I called Mark.
He answered from the car.
“Hey.”
“Where is Chloe?”
A pause.
“What?”
“Jenna went to school. Chloe was already gone.”
Another pause.
Then he sounded irritated.
“I thought you changed the pickup.”
“No.”
“I’m in traffic, Sarah.”
“Where is our daughter?”
“I don’t know.”
Those four words changed the entire evening.
Mark claimed he had been in meetings since noon.
Evelyn said she had not seen Chloe.
Amber did not answer my first two calls.
Mark insisted there had probably been confusion with the school.
Then he told me to continue getting ready for the charity dinner because “panicking publicly” would accomplish nothing.
I did not go to the dinner.
I drove to the school.
The administrator met me at the front desk with an expression that made my heart start pounding.
“Your daughter was collected using the family authorization.”
“By whom?”
“I need to confirm something first.”
“Please.”
She turned her monitor away from me.
I could not see details, but I watched her face.
Then she said, “Someone from your husband’s office.”
“Amber?”
She would not confirm without law enforcement present.
That was enough.
I called Mark again.
This time he became angry.
“Stop dragging employees into this.”
“Did Amber pick Chloe up?”
“I told you I don’t know.”
“Call her.”
“She’s working.”
“Our daughter is missing.”
“She is not missing.”
I went completely still.
“What did you say?”
Mark went silent.
“You just said she’s not missing.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“How do you know?”
“Sarah, go home.”
“Where is Chloe?”
He hung up.
That was when I called the police.
Twenty minutes later, Mark called back.
His voice had changed.
Calm.
Controlled.
“Come to the house.”
“Is Chloe there?”
“We need to talk.”
“Is she there?”
Another silence.
“Just come home.”

When I arrived, the black SUV was parked outside with its rear hatch open.
And Chloe’s pink backpack was inside.
