Chapter 8 - CLAIRE DIDN’T TAKE DANIEL BACK

Daniel assumed Claire would eventually return.
That was perhaps the greatest evidence that he had learned nothing yet.
Three months after the beach, he came to my house for Emma’s overnight bag.
He looked exhausted.
“You talked to Claire?”
“No.”
“She won’t answer me.”
“That sounds like a Claire problem.”
“She blamed me for everything.”
I stared at him.
“You lied to her.”
“She knew I was married.”
“She also believed I had already separated.”
“That doesn’t make what she did okay.”
“No.”
He looked surprised.
I continued.
“Claire made choices that hurt me. She owned them. You keep distributing your choices across everybody else.”
His jaw tightened.
“You think she’s innocent?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“Then why did you forgive her?”
“I didn’t say I forgave her either.”
“What are you saying?”
“That whether Claire becomes a better person is none of my business.”
He looked away.
“And me?”
“You’re Emma’s father. So unfortunately, your growth remains somewhat relevant.”
Despite everything, he almost smiled.
Then the smile disappeared.
“She said she can’t trust me.”
I looked at him.
“What did you expect?”
“I gave up my marriage for her.”
“No.”
His face hardened.
“You gave up your marriage for the possibility of her.”
He said nothing.
“That’s different.”
Claire eventually sent me a short note after the divorce was finalized.
She had moved back to Boston.
She apologized again.
No request for friendship.
No dramatic confession.
Just:
I should have insisted on speaking to you before believing a married man who told me his marriage was already over. I’m sorry Emma was anywhere near what happened.
I kept the note for a week.
Then threw it away.
