Chapter 4 - THE MARRIAGE DANIEL KEPT REWRITING

Daniel and I met at twenty-seven.
He had been separated from Claire for almost four years by then.
Claire moved to Boston after graduate school.
Daniel stayed in Texas.
Long distance failed.
No betrayal.
No dramatic ending.
Just two people who loved each other and chose different lives.
At least, that was the story Daniel told me.
For years I never felt threatened by her.
When he mentioned Claire, it was nostalgic rather than longing.
Then his father died.
That changed him.
Daniel started talking about time.
Regret.
Choices.
What life might have looked like if certain things had happened differently.
At first, I tried to listen.
“Are you unhappy?”
“I don’t know.”
“With me?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“But are you?”
He would become irritated.
“Why does everything have to become about our marriage?”
Because he was my husband.
Because when a married man repeatedly wondered aloud whether he chose the correct life, his wife is allowed to notice.
Still, Daniel did enough ordinary loving things that I doubted my instincts.
He took Emma to preschool.
Kissed me goodbye.
Remembered our anniversary.
Replaced the battery in my car before I knew it was failing.
People want betrayal to come from monsters.
Usually it comes from ordinary people who slowly give themselves permission to become dishonest.
Daniel began talking to Claire after the memorial.
At first, he later claimed, it was harmless.
They remembered friends.
College.
The apartment they shared for six months.
Then Daniel started telling her things about our marriage.
Some true.
Some distorted.
Some entirely invented.
Yes, we had argued.
No, I had never asked to separate.
Yes, I sometimes stayed at my sister’s after late family gatherings.
No, I had never moved there.
Yes, we had discussed whether our marriage needed counseling.
No, we had not agreed it was over.
He took ordinary fractures and widened them in every retelling until Claire was looking at a collapsed marriage I did not know existed.
Why?
Because Daniel wanted permission before making a decision.
He did not want to leave me and discover Claire did not want him.
He wanted Claire secured first.
Then he could make our marriage officially match the version he had already sold her.
That was why the beach mattered.
He had spent six months building two roads.

At the resort, he expected them to merge.
Instead, both women compared maps.
