Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Patricia

By five o'clock that afternoon, news of the legal freeze on Harrington Enterprises had sent shockwaves through Atlanta's business community. The company’s stock value was wobbling, and board members were frantically calling my mobile phone.
I sat in the formal living room of my mansion, sipping a glass of iced water while Victoria Sterling reviewed the next phase of our filings on her laptop.
The heavy front door opened, and the sound of frantic footfalls echoed through the marble foyer.
Patricia burst into the living room. Her hair, usually perfectly coiffed, was disheveled, and her expensive wool coat hung loosely off her shoulders. She looked aged, broken, and desperate.
"Eleanor!" Patricia cried out, rushing toward me. "Eleanor, you have to stop this!"
Julian immediately stepped in front of his grandmother, his arm extended to block her path. "That's close enough, Grandmother."
Patricia stopped, looking at her grandson with betrayed eyes. "Julian! How can you stand there and let your mother do this? She is ruining your father's memory! She is throwing your half-brother out onto the street!"
"My half-brother?" Julian said, his voice dropping into a cold, hard tone that mirrored his father’s commanding presence, but carried my morality. "You mean the child Dad fathered while lying to my mother for over a decade? The child you visited behind our backs every month while coming to our house for Sunday dinner?"
Patricia flinched as if struck. "I... I was stuck in the middle, Julian! Michael was my son! What was I supposed to do? Turn my back on my own grandchild?"
"You were supposed to have honor, Patricia," I said, stepping around Julian to face her. "You could have demanded that Michael come clean. You could have refused to participate in the deception. Instead, you accepted his bribes. Do you think I didn't know about the jewelry, Patricia?"
Patricia froze, her face turning pale. "What... what jewelry?"
I pulled a small leather ledger from my desk and opened it to a specific page.
"October 12th, 2016," I read calmly. "A Cartier diamond bracelet, purchased for $28,000 using funds from Harrington Holdings LLC. Delivered directly to your home address in Buckhead. May 4th, 2019: A luxury European cruise, fully paid through the same shell company. November 2021: Renovation of your country club cottage, paid via fake corporate invoices."
I looked at my mother-in-law, whose eyes were wide with terror.
"You didn't just keep his secret out of maternal love, Patricia," I whispered. "You kept his secret because Michael was paying you to be silent."
Patricia dropped into an armchair, covering her face with her trembling hands. "Eleanor... please... I have no money of my own. You know Michael controlled my late husband's trust. If you freeze everything, how am I going to live?"
"You will live on the modest monthly stipend defined in your late husband's original, unamended trust," I said coldly. "Not a penny more. The luxury allowances, the corporate credit cards, and the paid staff at your home are terminated as of 5:00 PM today."

"You are a monster," Patricia sobbed, looking up at me with pure hatred. "You sat at my table for thirteen years pretending to love us, while you plotted to destroy us!"
"I didn't plot to destroy you, Patricia," I corrected, standing tall and looking down at her. "I simply recorded your choices. You destroyed yourselves the moment you decided my kindness was a sign of weakness."
