Chapter 11 - The Audit of the Past

With Rachel Monroe signed out of the picture and the property claims legally surrendered back to Harrington Enterprises, the final phase of my plan turned inward toward the corporation itself.
For two weeks, Victoria Sterling and her team of forensic accountants lived in the executive boardrooms on the thirty-second floor. They audited every ledger, every invoice, and every email server stretching back fifteen years.
What they uncovered was far grander than even I had anticipated.
"Michael wasn't working alone, Eleanor," Victoria told me during a late-night session in my office, sliding a thick audit report across the desk.
"Who else was involved?" I asked, looking at the highlighted names.
"Three senior members of your current Board of Directors," Victoria revealed, pointing to the signatures. "Arthur Pendelton, Thomas Vance, and Gregory Hayes. For the last decade, Michael allowed them to run private, off-the-books investment funds through company subsidiaries in exchange for their total cooperation in hiding his personal asset transfers from you."
I smiled faintly, tracing my finger over the names. "So they weren't just protecting Michael's affair. They were protecting their own illegal profit margins."
"Precisely," Victoria said. "When Michael died, they assumed you would remain a figurehead chairwoman while they quietly restructured the board to take absolute control of the company."
"They assumed wrong," I said, picking up my phone and dialing my son's extension. "Julian, call an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors for tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. Tell them attendance is mandatory."

"Are we firing them, Mom?" Julian asked over the receiver.
"Firing them would be far too gentle, Julian," I replied smoothly. "We are going to offer them the exact same choice I gave your father's mistress."
