Chapter 7 - ELAINE’S VERSION OF FAMILY
Elaine came to Rachel’s sister’s house two months later.
She carried a container of homemade soup and an apology arranged carefully enough to avoid full responsibility.
“I should have stopped him.”
“Yes.”
“I was shocked.”
“You told Lilly to sit down.”
Elaine looked toward the driveway.
“I was trying to prevent a larger scene.”
“Your son slapped me. The scene already existed.”
Elaine said she had spent Mark’s entire life protecting him from Robert’s harshness and believed loyalty meant keeping family problems private. She admitted knowing Mark wanted control of the company but insisted she thought the management agreement was temporary.
“Did you know he planned to use Lilly?”
“I thought he was speaking out of anger.”
“You heard him.”
“I didn’t think he meant it.”
That sentence had protected Mark for decades.
He did not mean the insult.
He did not mean the threat.
He did not mean the hand around Rachel’s wrist.
Every act became harmless once Elaine assigned it a gentler intention.
Rachel returned the soup.
“You are not seeing Lilly until the custody evaluator says contact is appropriate.”
Elaine’s face hardened.
“I am her grandmother.”
“That is a relationship, not a permit.”
For the first time, Rachel saw clearly that Elaine’s silence at Thanksgiving had not come from confusion.
She had made a choice.
Keeping Mark comfortable mattered more than protecting Rachel or Lilly.
