Chapter 2 - FAMILY TRADITIONS

Lilly had not started recording because she expected violence.

Her third-grade class had been assigned a short project called “Our Family Traditions.” Each child was supposed to record food, decorations, and relatives explaining what Thanksgiving meant to them.

She filmed Rachel stirring cranberries before sunrise.

She filmed Robert placing extra chairs around the table.

She recorded Kyle stealing a piece of turkey skin and Elaine rearranging the silverware because she disliked the way Rachel had positioned the forks.

The tablet stayed running longer than anyone realized.

Lilly had set it on a shelf near the dining room doorway while helping Rachel carry glasses from the kitchen. From that angle, it captured the table, part of the hallway, and voices coming from Robert’s study.

Mark had entered the study with Elaine and Kyle forty minutes before dinner.

Their conversation was not clear at first. Plates clattered, relatives talked, and the television played from the next room. But when Lilly increased the volume, Mark’s voice became recognizable.

“She won’t sign if we ask again.”

Elaine answered, “Then stop asking like she has a choice.”

Kyle spoke next. “What if she calls the bank?”

“She won’t,” Mark said. “Not after today.”

Rachel looked across the dining room at her husband.

“What were you trying to make me sign?”

Mark reached for the tablet again.

Kyle lowered his fork.

Elaine said Lilly had misunderstood an adult conversation. Mark agreed and ordered Rachel to turn off the recording before she humiliated the family further.

Lilly’s thumb moved across the blurred screen.

Another section began.

This time Mark’s voice was closer.

“Get her angry in front of everyone. Once she starts yelling, Kyle records it. We show the board she’s unstable, and I take temporary control before the lender reviews the accounts.”

No one at the table moved.

Then Elaine’s voice said:

“And the child?”

Mark answered without hesitation.

“Rachel won’t fight over the company if she thinks she can lose Lilly.”

The room had been silent after the slap.

Now it felt airless.
