Chapter 7 - RICHARD WHITAKER’S NAME

News outlets became obsessed with Richard.
The billionaire father.
The helicopter.
The cathedral entrance.
They told the story as though an unknown heiress had been rescued by the powerful man whose blood secretly protected her.
That was not my story.
Richard’s money made lawyers, medical specialists, and security easier to obtain. I will never pretend otherwise. But wealth had not kept my mother from leaving him decades earlier. It had not prevented Preston from reaching me. It did not heal fractured ribs, restore trust, or silence the sound of snow breaking beneath my feet.
Richard and I did not become father and daughter in one dramatic embrace.
We became two people sitting beside a hospital window while he admitted he had once allowed family expectations to decide whom he married and what questions he stopped asking.
“I didn’t know about you,” he said.
“I believe that.”
“I still failed to look for your mother.”
“That belongs between you and her.”
He accepted the boundary.
That mattered more than his last name.
DNA testing later confirmed what my mother’s letter claimed. Richard offered to place me inside his estate plan immediately.
I declined.
“My son and I need safety, not another fortune tied to another man’s decisions.”
He looked hurt, then thoughtful.
“What can I do?”
“Help me understand the insurance case. Don’t own the rest.”
May you like
He agreed.
It was the first relationship with a powerful man in which my no did not become an argument.
