Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN BESIDE HIM
Vanessa broke first.
Not in the cathedral.
Later, during an interview after investigators confronted her with messages recovered from Preston’s phone.
She had known about the insurance payout.
She knew Preston wanted me gone.
But she claimed she believed the plan was to frighten me into leaving the marriage and signing over trust control. She said she did not realize he intended to push me until we reached the cliff.
Her messages told a darker story.
Three days before the trip, she asked:
How long before the policy pays if there’s no body?
Preston answered:
Longer. But the trust can borrow against the claim.
Vanessa then asked whether pregnancy complicated the payout.
Preston wrote:
It doubles the tragedy. Nobody questions the grieving husband.
She had also searched winter exposure survival times and directions to Ravenstone Cliff.
Yet the recording from Preston’s phone showed that when he pushed me, Vanessa said, “Stop. She’s pregnant.”
Fear had reached her too late.
That did not make her innocent.
It made her a participant who finally saw the full shape of the plan after helping build it.
She cooperated in exchange for consideration, turning over a second phone containing messages Preston thought she had deleted. Those records connected him to the broker, forged consent forms, and a proposed loan secured by the anticipated insurance payout.
Preston had already promised Vanessa a house in California.
The deposit was scheduled to come from borrowed funds against my death claim.
He had planned our future in spreadsheets.
Mine ended at the cliff.
